Print displays

Print displays

2002-09-17 by Bill Giffen

I have just received my 7600 and will be in the process of supplying prints
of my photographs to various locations. I will also have a few gallery
showings at some of Houston finer Day spas, and restaurants. I also have
four retail shops to display my prints, Avis car rental I know sounds weird)
several specialty shops and my one big shop in Fredricksburg Texas.

Question: what sizes should I print. I shoot from a D1x and shoot full
frame. 8x12 and 11x17 etc.. , after matting a 11x17 would yield a 17x23. I
know in some places this might be a little large (for avis) but in one day
spa I have a great brick wall about 30ft with plenty of room. Should I make
the largest prints I can to show and maybe have a few smaller samples prints
for them to see also. What do you think about retail outlets 8x12 with a few
largers prints.

also, I have been printing B&W with my 7000 but mainly for portrait work, I
have yet to find really good methods to mount the print in my mats. I have a
rotor trim and a nice matt cutter. I have taped the prints and hinged the
mats, and used corner mounts and taped the matt. There is I am sure many
ways to do this but I am still in the dark as to how to present my prints in
retail outlets.

I really appreciate any help. I am also posting in other groups

Bill,

I like the 10x15 size. I put them in a 16x21 frame. If you are
mounting traditionally, I would just have a window mat cut and tape
the print on the back with white archival tape...available at most
art stores. Then put a back board on it with a hinge at the
top...the sandwich ( print between two mount boards) goes into a
plastic bag that is form fitting. Galleries prefer this way

Alternative way for shops, which keeps the cost down with less matt
cutting.. mount the print on a single board with no over-mat. I use
3M Vac-U-Mount spray for that...then put it in a plastic bag...and a
label on the back of the mat.

Bags come in many sizes from several different suppliers. I have
used Impact Images for 5-6 years...they are located on the East and
West Coast.

Good luck,

RE: [Digital BW] Print displays

2002-09-17 by Andrew Biggs

Bill-

I was in the same dilemma a few weeks ago. I decided to do the
following.

I am having a show in Austin, starting next week and until October 2th.
There will be 20 images, 15 in color and 5 in b&w, all printed from my
Epson 2200, and most captured on a Canon D30 or Tri-X on a Canham 4x5.

All color prints will be 11x17, 9x17 or 7x17 in size. The b&w prints
will be 11x17 or 9x17. All frames will be 21x27, which is a 5 inch
border on all sides when using an 11x17 print. Obviously, more on top
and bottom for smaller prints.

The frames are a Nielson matte black frame, with the whitest mat board I
could find. Americanframe.com is preparing all of these for me: the
metal frames, plexi, 1/8" foamcore, mounting hardware, and custom cut
mats for about $30 per frame. Not bad, in my opinion. I could definitely
do it for less, but I don't have the time right now. I will definitely
invest in a mat cutter and other tools in the future.

One thing that I think is incredibly important: I am creating a 10x10
bio with a photo of me and text, printed on glossy Epson paper, and dry
mounted onto gatorfoam, to be displayed on the wall nearest the entrance
of where people will first see the photos. And I also am making 5x5
descriptions of each photo (location, equipment, notes, and price) next
to each image. Since businesses do not want you to mark up their walls,
I am attaching these descriptions with that poster silly putty-like
material, so it will come off easily for my next show. And of course,
the good old fashioned picture hangers for the photos.

I hope this helps!

If anybody is interested in seeing these images, they will be in the
Dripping Springs public library. Sorry for the shameless plug.

:)

Epson printer comparisons plus inks

2002-09-17 by Bill Agee

I am looking for feedback from anyone who has used MIS Archival inks
in a 1270/1280/7000 and now is using a 2200/7600.

For paper I use mostly EAM on the low end and Han Photo Rag 308 on
the high end..

Though I do some color, I usually print from black and white scanned
negatives. I print them out as warm or cool black and white or
heavily toned using the MIS inks.

I am thinking that the new printers with the Epson inks may be the
answer for what I want with a reasonable archival life. When the
printers get chipped, then I could use the MIS inks again if I didn't
like the results.

What are your feelings about the quality/cost differences using these
two combinations of inks and printers as they are currenty available?

I'm using a 1270 with CIS and GEN4 pigs. My 2200 and IP5 comes tomorrow.
I have just printed a variety of color and GS images for comparison.
More as I get the new printer in place and working.

I'm actually as anxious as you are.
We have been using IP with our 10000 an are very happy with it. Colorbyte has been very responsive to all questions and their free custom profiles are excellent.
This copy of IP is on my personal dime so I would have been very hesitant if we hadn't had the very good experience with them.
I've ordered lots of carts (Atlex has a great price) and Enhanced Matte and expect to do a bunch of comparison printing and testing this week with both RGB and gs images.
More to follow.

Re: [Digital BW] Epson printer comparisons plus inks

2002-09-17 by Shire,Stanley

Boo!
Printer won't be in until Friday. Colorbyte is shipping IP5 (desktop version) on Thurs.
Hopefully, a weekend print marathon.

    Stanley-

please please please please post some feedback with IP5 and your 2200. I
have a 2200, and I am waiting to hear from the masses as to a few
    things:

are the profiles worth the investment?
    how are the b&w prints?
    toned b&w prints?
    support?

We are all dying to know!

    Thanks in advance

    Andy

          Bill:
          I'm using a 1270 with CIS and GEN4 pigs. My 2200 and IP5 comes
    tomorrow.
I have just printed a variety of color and GS images for
    comparison.
More as I get the new printer in place and working.

Subject: [Digital BW] Epson printer comparisons plus inks

I am looking for feedback from anyone who has used MIS Archival
    inks
          in a 1270/1280/7000 and now is using a 2200/7600.

For paper I use mostly EAM on the low end and Han Photo Rag 308
    on
          the high end..

Though I do some color, I usually print from black and white
    scanned
negatives. I print them out as warm or cool black and white or
heavily toned using the MIS inks.

I am thinking that the new printers with the Epson inks may be
    the
answer for what I want with a reasonable archival life. When
    the
printers get chipped, then I could use the MIS inks again if I
    didn't
          like the results.

What are your feelings about the quality/cost differences using
    these
two combinations of inks and printers as they are currenty
    available?
