Albert,

This sounds like what is sometimes called corduroy banding where no paper
shows through but the density varies to create bands parallel to the travel
of the print head. There have been times with my two 1280's when this was
not present but for the most part it is there. Various things can help but
never seem to completely eliminate it but I have mine down to where you need
a loupe to see it.

Try cleaning out the heads with Windex or ammonia and water using a syringe
and cleaning the undersides of the heads.

Full head realignment, not just the lines portion but the two rows of
squares as well.

Try sending your file to the printer at a different resolutions. This can be
a big help and will often move or narrow the effected tonal range.

Re: [Digital BW] Light banding-- what are the signs of it?

2002-09-18 by Albert Wang

Hi Martin,

thanks so much. I did the full printer head realignment and yes it's
most evident on EAM using a loupe... I don't notice it much unless
I'm looking at the print from an angle about 30 degrees south rather
than straight on.

I wonder whether Piezography BW with continuous tone will outdo the
limited Epson driver. I am considering upgrading to a ICC profile
from Cone for the C80 so that I can print at 2880 dpi without
hesitation on matte paper and it is rather irritating that the Epson
driver limits it to only 1440 dpi.

Albert,

No matter what I do, I still get some microbanding at 1440 dpi, but if I
switch to 2880 dpi it almost disappears, even under a x10 loupe.

Where are the "two rows of squares" in the realignment procedure???

Stan,

This is the second half of the alignment procedure on the 1280 and I assume
other printers. First step is the three rows of fine lines. Once you have
that aligned to your satisfaction you continue on and in two printing steps
the printer prints two rows of 9 - 1/4" squares. You are supposed to
determine which is the least grainy in each row, enter the proper numbers
and if they are not both #5 realign and print the two rows again. Very time
consuming but it can help.

RE: [Digital BW] Light banding-- what are the signs of it?

2002-09-22 by Shire,Stanley

Martin:
Would that it were true. I have the latest driver version for both 1270
and 3000. Neither has a two step alignment (with blocks.) Sounds like a
winner but apparently it was only implemented on 1280 and later. The
3000 is still corduroy banding (even after the head transplants.) I've
done the alignment (with a 15x loupe), varied the thickness lever, etc.
The only thing I haven't tried is eye of newt or other incantations.
