BW with Epson 2200

BW with Epson 2200

2002-09-22 by Bobby Wants A Banana!

Well, I was just about to convert my 1280 to a dedicated BW printer
with the Pieziography CIS kit and lo and behold I read in Luminous
Landscape that the 2200 really does a great job with BW (
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/printers/2200-bw.shtml ).
So what should I do? Any one have any suggestions or experiences they
would like to share would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

As far as a number of us can tell, the new ultrachromes only work with EAM
for matte printing. Results are really poor on other 3rd party papers. If
you are interested in making RC style color prints on Epson Luster or Epson
Gloss papers, the ultrachromes look great...and the 2200 is the way to
go...probably with the soon to be released Imageprint 5.0/2200 to drive it.
But if you are interested in printing on matte fine art papers I would stick
with quad BW systems.

I would offer another opinion. (Wasn't that diplomatic?).

I have found that the Ultrachromes work VERY well with EAM, yes, but also with
PhotoRag and BrightCube Eclipse Satine (which is gone now). Even the canned
profile of EAM works great. All of these papers are, of course, for use with the
matte black ink.

For glossy or semi, use the PhotoBlack, and try Luster Epson. Many people
report nice results with that, but I can't speak first-hand; I only use matteblack
and matte papers.

For critical work, to avoid color crossover, a custom profile should be made.

There has also been some talk this week about a discovery that NO COLOR
ADJUSTMENT does not lay down the ink in such a linear matter, and that some
people are discovering that PHOTO REALISTIC in the Epson driver is more linear.
This of course, renders all your profiles unusable, and you've gotta start from
scratch, but I found that interesting. I have not verified this myself. (Secretly,
the concept of this seems odd to me; I would not want two different things
fighting each other, a profile and PhotoRealistic; NCA seems to turn off
everything, and just let the profile do it's thing).

For color printing, I think that the Ultrachromes look like they work ok
with Photorag...but with black and white printing you will get better dmax
with other black inks. The sample print that I saw with eclipse had an
acceptable dmax (for eclipse), 1.59, but there were definite ink load issues
at 100% black. Its likely that several of the 3rd party papers may work
work with the Ultrachromes, but it does not appear to be plug and
play...requiring at the least custom profiles and perhaps another driver
(e.g., Imageprint).

Robert

PS Mark, if you have driver settings for Eclipse that make it work, please
share...thanks.

Try some Fuji Neopan 1600, scan it, print it on the 2200. Dance around cause you see b&w within a matter of minutes.
