MIS FS-N on Somerset Velvet

MIS FS-N on Somerset Velvet

2002-09-30 by akivisuals

I read on a post that MIS FS-N doesn't do well on Somerset
Velvet. Does that go for the Somerset Photo Enhanced as well?
I have printed a bit on the Somerset and it looked a bit blotchy in
sections. Is that what the person was referring to? I like that I
don't see any corduroy banding on the Somerset as I do on EAM,
but I do really like the detail, bright white and smooth tones of the
EAM. Are there any other good options to try out? Thanks!

Andy,

It was my post you probably saw. Just to clarify, I use EAM and a
number of art papers with the FS-N on a 1280. Each paper requires a
bit of tweaking, which I do as an curve layer for each paper. My
attempt with Somerset Velvet (Enhanced) were not very good. I did not
work very hard to optimize. But I noticed really washed out tones, so
I stopped there. It is interesting that Somerset paper does not get
discussed very much in this forum.

Hope this helps.

Shilesh

Thanks Shilesh. I've heard a lot of people print with the
Somerset Velvet, but I haven't had any particularly good results
with that paper. The EAM prints great, but I'm a bit concerned
with the acid content of the paper and the fact that people are
noticing a change from the bright white to a more yellow tone. I
also really like the Photo Rag papers, but they are so expensive
that I'd really like a cheaper option. Which papers do you like for
good detail, smooth tones, deep blacks and for it's archival
properties?

Andy,

To be honest, IMO there is no paper like EAM, for many attributes,
inexpensive, readily available, great tonal range, fairly good
permanence, an on and on. I also use the Hehnemuhle line for showing,
when people actually handle the prints - the tactile effect. I don't
sell, so "archival" is not an issue for me. FS inks on EAM are "light-
fast" enough for me, and I don't worry whether the print will last
longer than my life. All of my b/w prints on my wall were made on EAM.

Eclipse Satine Bright White, and better yet Eclipse Satine Soft White
are excellent papers to use with FS inks. There are good deals to be
had at inkjetgoodies.com right now on these papers.

Hope this helps.
