Time to change inks correct but which ones?

Time to change inks correct but which ones?

2002-10-02 by tjphotoct

I have been using the orginal Piezo/Sundance inks since they
were introduced. I am not always able to check out this list but
now that I have I see there are problems, real or imagined, with
the original Piezo inks and the new Piezotone inks.
I have come to this list because I need unbiased information
about which inks are available right now and are usable for
portfolio presentation and which are available and best for
display.
I guess what I am asking for is a straight answer on which inks
to use that will not fade and will not require days of fiddling about
trying to get them to work. I am not concerned so much about
archival qualities but that would be a plus. I need to reprint four
new portfolios for my agents and I need to get them done now.
I print with an 1160 and a 3000 and use Somerset Photo
Enhanced and EAM papers.
Thank you for any help you can offer.
Regards,
Thom Jackson

I've been asking the same questions- If you need to print now, go with some more sundance inks- available at http://www.digitalartsupplies.com/
They call them warm-neutral inks. This is what the original Cone piezography inks were. I believe a set of 4-4oz bottles is $125.00.
MIS makes a direct replacement for the original Cones inks called MIS FS quads. http://www.inksupply.com/
They work with the Epson driver using a downloadable curve or with the Cone Piezo Driver as a direct replacement ink,. However, if you change to MIS, no matter how
compatable they say they are, you will have to discard your current CIS and start fresh. I'm sure the profiles will be a little off as well.
If you want a band-aid to print your portfolio prints while you are sifting through the choices, you may want to try the sundance carts instead of buying a whole set of bulk
inks. I'm guessing that would be cheaper, and I'm assuming you are using a CIS type of system. I myself have decided to get out of quad tone printing. I just don't do enough to
justify buying a new set of ink, no matter whose brand I buy. I love my 1280 with the Gen4 ink. If I need the occasional BW print, I can cobble through by making a green/
magenta compensation adjustment layer. It's not perfect, but good enough. I have just listed my 1160's on E-Bay.

John,
Thanks very much for your advice. I guess no one has a definitive
answer. I have ordered more Sundance but I have two 3000 printers and
one of them is in the shop getting refurbished and new heads. I don't
want to initiate that printer with more Sundance if there are problems
with that ink.
Frankly I haven't had any problems with Sundance but I am constantly
reprinting my work and throwing the old prints away so I don't see any
fade problems. Most of my prints are in portfolios behind plastic or
they are stored in large file drawers. I just haven't had problems but
I don't want any and that is why I am asking for some non biased
comments.
Best,
Thom

I have been using the original piezo inks in my 3000's since piezography
first came out. I have had no problems with fading or clogging. I just
finished printing another set of photos for my portfolio with no problems
at all. I'm on my fourth set of cartridges. Those things last
forever! When I finally run out, I plan to replace them with the original
inks from Sundance. I don't want to fix something that's not broken!!

Hope this helps.

The ORIGINAL cone inks are totally compatible with MIS VM and
Generations 4 inks. No flushing or cleaning needed.

I just received the MIS-FSN 4oz quadset. Is what your saying true
also for the FSN inkset or is this just playing with fire ?

Jerry,
Thanks for the advice.
Does that mean that the MIS are Sundance inks also?
I have tried to stay with Cone because I get one day service from
UPS using standard ground because I live in Ct. which is the
same zone as IJM. Sounds silly but sometimes I cut it close and
I can count on ink and paper the next day.
My first effort with Quadtone before there was an Inkjetmall I tried
MIS but they clogged my Epson Ex so I gave up until Piezo came
along.
Thanks,
Thom

Tina,
I guess that's what I was trying to say too. I haven't had any real
problems with the Sundance Inks when they were called Piezo
inks so I guess I can continue using them. I live a long way from
Ca. and it takes them forever to get here unlike IJM which I
receive in one day using UPS ground.
Have you figured out a way to really know how much ink is left in
your 3000 carts?
Thanks,

Everybody tells me that if you have a CIS, the lines and sponge in the cart are tainted and you will have problems if you simply hook up anothers ink even if it is compatable. If
your running carts, then I would agree that the above may be true.

Thom,

Tina is right. With all the complaints over the original PiezoBW/Sundance
ink, people tend to forget that it has worked just fine for many people
especially on the 3000. I would guess that more prints have been made with
this ink than any other. I have many wonderful prints with these inks from
various print exchanges. If you like what you are getting then stick with
it.

No, I just know that when it starts flashing, I still have a lot more
prints to make. You can take the cartridge out and shake it or weigh
it. I just print until I can't get a good nozzle check. Then I know it is
empty. It seems to keep going forever even when it's empty!

No, MIS is NOT the same as sundance. Sundance is the same as the
original piezo inks, and did have clogging problems way back when.

I've used MIS VM Inks and Genereations Enhanced black for over 3 years
with not a single serious clogging problem. Highly recommended.

I've actually mixed Piezo inks and MIS and Generations inks together. No
clogging problems at all. (The FIRST generation of Piezo inks, and
Generations 3 and 4 inks)

Weigh them and compare to a full and empty cart.

The MIS FS inkset IS the same as the original Piezo/Sundance and can
be used interchangably. The FS inkset is also significantly less
expensive and appears to have fewer reports of clogging.

Julian, What is the New Portfolio Black? Never heard of it. Who makes
it? If it isn't blacker than the Gen 4 Enhanced black, there'd be no
point in trying it.

I wouldn't dare use anything made or recommended by cone anymore. Those
inks have just had too many problems. I've been using the Generations
and MIS inks for 3 years and have had no fading, no clogging, no problems.

I used MIS VM inks, but I believe that ALL MIS inks are compatible with
each other.

Check first, but I'm fairly sure this is true.

Move to quarantaine
