Hello all:

Is it possible to repair or replace the contact tines in the 1270 
print head with out going to EPSON.

I think the printhead, cartridge holder, cart contact tines, the two 
small circuit boards with the ribbon cable slots (ie., the entire 
printhead assembly) is sold as one unit.  If memory serves me right 
the 1270 printhead is about $145US.  You can order one from your 
local Epson repair shop.

That's correct. Plus the Labor cost to install...I had an estimate of 
about $245 from the local "authorized dealer" in my area for the 
whole job....Though I hated to do it, I trashed the printer and went 
for a 1280 instead with the rebate...I was afraid something else 
would have bombed later on...it was a great printer until the tines 
broke off.   The dealer claimed they broke while they were trying to 
repair them...go figure!

Ed,

I've fixed this problem (I mistakenly installed a cart without the chip).
Try using a loupe for magnification and an exacto knife to bend them back
into place. I've been using the repaired 1280 for almost 4 months with no
problems, though I have to admit I installed  a CIS as soon as I could in
order to minimize the cart exchanges.

I went and bought a CFS system from MIS, based on the conversations 
on this list, and then realized I still need a color printer, so 
bought a second 1280.

My question is: can I have both printers, one dedicated to black and 
white and one to color, hooked up to the same machine or will I have 
a conflict and have to change printers every time I want to print?

On a related question: can I use one printer on two computers (a Wintel
2000 and a Mac G4)?

It depends on the software of your OS, usually you can set one printer
as default, and opt for another one when needed.

I am not sure about a Mac, but on a PC you can run two or more 
printers through USB connections.  I have a 1280 and a 1200 on my PC 
at this point and just select the one I want to use throug the print 
function in PS.

I am on a mac running OS 9.1. Margaret said she thought it shouldn't 
be a problem, I just need to go to the chooser and tell the driver 
which usb port to print to. I will have to give it a try when the 
printer gets here but I was kind of hoping that I could name the 
driver epson 1280 bw and epson 1280 color, or something like that.

It may be that it was never meant to be set up like this and I will 
have to change my work flow to accomodate.

What do other people do with a duel printer set up if they are twin printers?

Matt - I currently run three printers (a 2200, an 1160 and a 1280) with USB
connections off of my Mac (G4).  It's just a matter of picking the right
printer from the chooser (I'm still using OS 9.1) before you print.

You turn the one you want to use on. If you put them both on at the same
time you will have a fun time with the USB ports.

Should be no problem to run several printers at same time or run 
same printer from two computers.  What I did was set the printers up 
on a small network.  My wife and I both have a computer in the same 
room.  That way each one has an address and files can be put in the 
que from either computer.  Or at either printer.  Besides 1280's I 
also have a laser BW on the same network.

On my Mac, also still under 9.1, I have two 1160s, also one for B&W 
and one for color, but only one (not re-named) driver. So I just turn 
on the printer I want (otherwise I leave them covered, and turned off 
so the heads will be parked on the pads and not dry out). Having 
turned on the one I want to use, I try to do a nozzle check, and 
change the USB port selection in the Chooser if the nozzle check 
doesn't work (I don't leave paper in the printers).

This is less trouble than it sounds like because when I first turn 
the computer on each day, I Nozzle-Check and do a Clean if necessary 
(rarely), on each printer, doing the B&W first and therefore leaving 
the Chooser, by default, on the color port for the rest of the day 
unless I print some B&W. If the humidity were very low where I live, 
I would do the same thing each day before shutting the computer down 
overnight. And I would do it anyway if I didn't get perfect 
Nozzle-Check prints almost every day, both with MIS VM Sepia-Neutral 
and with Gen4 color (with VM black swapped in for Gen4 K).

Since both printers are 1280s, they both use the same driver, Right? 
So I only have one icon. Or can I install the same driver twice?

I think you have to rename one with the epson namer.

The Epson Namer is only supposed to be used in localtalk and ethernet 
situations, as I discovered on this site:

I routinely run an Epson 1270 with color and an Epson 1160 with VM 
simultaneously on a Mac.

 I use a PowerMac 733 with Classic 9.2 running under OS 10.2. I print in the 
background with both printers using the standard Epson System 9 drivers with 
Phototshop 6.0 running in Classic 9.2 within 10.2. 

As mentioned previously you do have to select the second printer with 
Chooser after you get the first printer started. I also surf the internet or work in 
photoshop or other programs while both printers are working. 

I used to crash in 9.1 fairly frequently; however, since I have been running 9.2 
within 10.2, I have not had a crash. By the way, I have not inadvertantly 
crashed 10.2 thus far. 

I have had no success with the OS X Epson drivers as far as getting what I 
want out of a printer without a lot of hassle but have had some success with 
the Gimp drivers for non-photographic printing. I have not tried the Gimp 
drivers to any extent for photographic printing because the 9.2 solution works 
so well for me presently.
