Sharpen scan or after?

Sharpen scan or after?

2002-11-17 by thronxx

Hi all,

Anyone have opinions about sharpening during the scan vs. afterward
in Photoshop? I'm scanning negatives in a Coolscan III with
Silverfast.

I've heard reasons for both.

TIA, Jeffrey

Slight sharpening during the scan can tighten up some softness
introduced when using digital ICE, but in general I think it's best to
sharpen as the last thing to do after sizing for printing.

I think it depends on many variables. The scanner and software combination
you are using may do a better or worse job than post scanning in PS. It may
work different depending on film type. Or, a combination of pre and post
scanning (my choice with SilverFast) may be best. The scanner interpolates
anyway so it seems to me the better software might might also do a better
job of sharpening "inside" the interpolatve process.

Hi Group,

1st time caller, long time listener here.

I'm by no means a scanning or digital imaging expert but I did stay at
a Holiday Inn last night, Seriously, I just attended DIFP here in ATL
(very informative, www.difp.com) and Jeff Shewe, who is a Photoshop
expert puts it this way. There's no better software in the world for
managing pixels than Photoshop. Therefore he reccomends scanning flat,
in Raw mode, and making all other adjustments in Photoshop and in 16
bit whenever possible.

I always sharpen in PS after the scan. Not all pics require the same
treatment, and some I only sharpen in certain areas and not others
(such as landscapes where I sometimes leave the sky unsharpened), or
in different amounts in diferent areas. Until I get involved with the
image in PS, with different layers, etc, I don't get a good feel for
what is needed.
