Photo Stitch

2002-11-19 by Stephen Jennings

I recently bought a Canon digital camera that came with a software program
called Photo Stitch that allows one to stitch images together into single
panoramas, etc. It works great with the camera's digital output, but it's
limited when stitching film scans. Is there a program similar to this that
works well with large scanned files?

Adobe Photoshop Elements has a feature called "Photo Merge,"
which does the stitching automatically. It isn't available in
Photoshop 6.0; maybe 7.0, but I don't know anything about that.
Photoshop Elements came free with the Epson 2450 I just
bought. I am sure it comes free with other hardware... but don't
ask me which ones. Or, you can buy it for about $100 from B&H.

Quick Time VR also stitches images together, but it is quite an
expensive program and the interface isn't that nice.

If you are working with a PC, there are lots of shareware and
freeware programs available online, but many of those have
limits on the file sizes you can stitch.

Good luck,
Justin

If you have PS 6 or PS 7 you can get PhotMerge to work in it..

Simply download even a trial copy of Elements, then copy the photomerge
plugins and a pair of dll's (in Windoze) over to the PS plugins location
and VOILA it works in Pshop..

I have the names of the actual files you need to copy/move somewhere, if
you want to try it..

Keith, Thanks for the info. Glad that there is a use to having
saved the PS Elements disc. What are the dll's that have to be
copied to the PS plugins location? Also, what folder would they go
into? The "Plugins" folder has several nested folders within.

I've used this (under various publishers) for a few years and have
stitched images from digi files to large film scans.

What do you mean by limited? Memory problems? How large files?

Copy the following files form your Elements subdirectories into your

\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop 6.0\Plug-ins\Adobe Photoshop
Only\Automate FOLDER (you may wish to create a new sub-folder of
automate called "From Elements")

PhotomergeAuto.8li (from the Automate folder)

PhotomergeRender.8BF (from the filters folder)
PhotomergeUI.8BF (from the filters folder)

Next copy the following dll's from the Elements main folder into your
photoshop main folder

asn.er.dll
htmlviewlib.dll
sfupload.dll
uid.mr.dll

IF THERE ARE NEWER VERSIONS ALREADY THERE, DO NOT OVERWRITE THEM

VOILA!

Photomerge will work in PShop...

BTW: For the Mac ppl: yes, it can be made to run on a Mac as well..

40 meg grayscale files from a Polaroid Sprintscan. I can link 2 scans
together fine, but when I try three I get garbage. At first it kept running
out of memory so I gave it lots but when I open the image I just lines. I'm
limiting myself to linking 2 scans at a time at the moment, but I'd really
like to go mental... Any suggestions?

Thanks for those explicit instructions, Keith. I did as you suggested,
and downloaded the trial version of Elements, and copied the files
across.

The .dll files that came with Elements did not include 'sfupload.dll',
and the Photomerge command won't work in Photoshop 6.0 ('program
error').

Can you give me any more hints?

I'll e-mail a copy of the dll to you offlist.. Let me know if it works

You probably need more photoshop memory. I have 800 Megabytes just for

In my version of Photoshop Elements, the 'sfupload.dll" file was
there, but I could not find the 'htmlviewlib.dll' file. I am using a
Mac, so I don't know if that makes a difference. The program
kind of works in PS6 now, but it really doesnt do a very good job
of stitching. (?)

Re: Photo Stitch

When I upgraded from Photoshop "Elements" to PS7, I mistakenly
thought that I would have all the features of "Elements" PLUS
the advanced features of PS7... NOT!

The absence of Photo Stitch is just one more disappointment.

Is it possible to have Photoshop "Elements" and PS7 installed
together on the same computer without problems? There are
times when I would be more comfortable working in "Elements",
even if it has to be in 8 bit mode.

BTW, I'm running XP Home Edition on a Pentium 4 machine.

Thanks,
Steve T.

Steve,
I run both Elements & PS7 on my machine. I like the
photo stitch feature and the red eye brush in
Elements. I've had no problems running them both on
the same machine. But I'm using Windows 2000P. Don't
know if that makes a difference.

Re: Photo Stitch

2002-11-21 by Editor P.O.V. Image Service

An important update is in order

I've been playing with a 2.0 Version of Elements for a few hours..

I can't get the new Version of Photomerge to work in either PhotoShop 6
or 7...

So, until/unless I or someone else figures out why it won't work, you
need to get the files I mentioned from a Version 1 Copy of Elements..

However, one thing that you can add to Photoshop 7 from Elements 2 AND
get to work there is the new "Copy to E-mail plugin." It'll allow you
to copy an open JPEG image directly to a new e-mail document. (It will
use the e-mail program specified in your Windows Options)

The plug-in in question is:

SendEMailEL.8LI

Copy it into your:
\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop 7.0\Plug-ins\Adobe Photoshop
Only\Automate FOLDER

You will then find it on startup in your "automate" sub-menu..
