Tom, how in God's name can you get a clean cut with a Dexter mat cutter?
What holds your whole apparatus down without anything moving? How do
you keep the mat cutter from weaving around while making a cut? I
majored in art when I was at the University, and nobody, not one person
could use a dexter and get a professional looking mat. Just wondering!! :)

One of my colleagues is astounding with a dexter. Learned at Brooks. He
uses a nonskid (rubber-backed) cutting bar to guide the dexter.
That said, I bought a Logan Framer's Edge (mod 650). Excellent cutter.
Many, very precise, adjustments to control over/undercuts. Cutters are
attached to the cutting bar. (Straight and 45 degree cutters). Very
nice. It costs around $400

[Digital BW] Re: Mat Cutters

2002-11-29 by Tom O'Connell

Jerry-

That's what I learned with (bought Logan later thinking it must be
great from all I'd heard but rarely use it because it lacks the
control of Dexter).

I use a 4" T Square over the end of the table and hold it flush with
my body at the T end and my left hand on the rule...then I can set
the blade in EXACTLY WHERE I WANT I IT and end the cut EXACTLY where
I want it. The one odd thing I do is move to examine the line up for
cut 4 before I make cut 3 so I can remark the corner if necesarry.

I get perfect corners every time with this...and I get furious when i
send stuff out to be done and the corners are all "overcut" to be
sure they come out easily. Every one of those I've seen were done
with a Logan type set up.

I also have a funny little Tsquare that is marked with double sets of
markings so you use it to center the cuts on the mat (not sure where
I got that, but it's really great.).

Cheers & Happy Thanksgiving,

tom

The positioning and marking tsquare is the Matline from Light
Impressions. Very useful.

The Logan 750 has worked great for me - I've matted 20 x 30 prints on 30
x 40 mat board, cut glass with the optional glass cutter, etc. Also,
Cheap Joes seemed to good price and excellent service.
