More BO Samples Available

More BO Samples Available

2002-11-30 by Clayton Jones

Hello All,

I am adding a little variety to my offer to send sample Black-Only
prints. I have three prints to offer, each of which showcases a
particular aspect which may be of interest. Together they span the
complete range of tonal possibilities. If you are really interested
in BO printing I recommend getting all three.

1) Landscape - This is a snowscape with fresh snow in sunlight, with
dappled shadows across part of it and clouds in the distance. Was
taken in the San Jacinto mountains. There are some blacks, but only
in small areas. This mostly shows how high key areas are handled.
The subtle ripples in the snow are clearly visible. From a 6x7 Tri-X
neg.

2) Still Life - This exquisite print shows two pottery pieces and has
a large area of solid black background, a lot of silvery mid tones,
with just a tiny area at the high end. If anyone has any doubts about
this technique's ability to render good blacks, this print should
dispell them. This is a very intense photograph. From a 645 Tri-X
neg.

3) Portrait - Medium distance portrait of a boy in a pure white
acolyte robe, with dark background. This print has it all, from the
pure white robe with its crisp folds and creases (so sharp you can see
the texture in the cloth) to substantial areas of solid black. From a
35mm Tri-X neg. This print has that classic Tri-X look and clearly
shows why people love this film.

I will send signed 4x5 prints on PhotoRag paper simply for the cost of
postage, just send me the stamps. Please include a note indicating
how many and which prints you want.

1 print - send two 1st class stamps

2 prints - send three stamps

3 prints - send four stamps

Please send to:

PO Box 7596

Ok, but never mind the envelope, it's such a hassle - just send the
stamps. I have a box of manila clasp envelopes I've had for years.

Hi All B&W HHeretics :)

I've been using somethings close to this for my 1280. However since
I am using a digital camera and shoot in color and convert to B&W,
I've use a slightly different work flow.

I use the L level from Lab color - never change the image to grey
scale, keeping the image at 48 bit. I find that for the 1280 the 48
bit color Lab L level and the 2880 resolution gives a better
continuous gray scale than does the 16 Grey Scale. I normally use
HWM (have tried a few glossy and they are really quite nice but I
fear the life span). I normally pick glossy Photo paper as the paper
even though I'm using HWM mat. The 2880 on my printer is vastly
superior to the 1440, although it literally takes for ever on 11 x
14 and larger prints. But it would take at least as long (30
minutes) to get a disply wet print IMHO.

Blacks are black, white are white, and you get a good gray scale
(depending on the photo). I also find that level adjustments to make
a good 0 and 100 level improve most pictures.

I can't remember where I read it, but I THINK I read that the new
1270/1280 black ink has a 50 year or so life. Can anyone confirm
this?

Regards,

Jeff Lee
