I tend toward papers like Photo Rag - smooth, matte, and very white. What is the whitest, smoothest matte paper available without optical brighteners? [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Eclipse satine bright white is whiter than photorag, has a very smooth surface and a textured surface on back, both sides printable, great price, 100 percent rag, acid free, etc.. Jerry hogarth wrote:

JO> Jerry Jerry, I am a big fan of Photo Rag even having only used it a short time. The blacks are much richer and darker for me printing with my 1160 and MIS FS-N inks than I get from printing on EAM or Eclipse Satin Bright White 190. Also the detail and sharpness is much finer when printing on the Photo Rag. I would love to use the Eclipse Satine bright white as I like it's texture, ability to choose either side to print on, and of course, price. My results, while good, still cannot rival the great results I see with Photo Rag. How are the results with the Eclipse Satine bright white compared to Photo Rag for you, and what printer and inks are you using? Did you do any curve or otherwise other adjustments to get better results with Eclipse Satine bright white? Thanks. If anyone else would like to chip in their comments/suggestions, please feel free.... Best regards, Richard mailto:richard@... I have the Cone driver but I'm getting awful banding in the midtones when I print with that on EAM or pretty much anything else. Best regards, Richard mailto:richard@... Richard, My eclipse prints are about as good as the photo rag. But I use the enhanced black ink from media street instead of the MIS ink, which is a deeper black. I use Paul's curves. I like photo rag, but it has 2 problems I can't live with; its too warm for me, and its way too expensive. When identical inks are used, photo rag does have deeper blacks, as does Royal riviera (Torchon), and Well's River, which would be my favorite paper if it didn't flake so bad. Sure is funny hahnemuhle hasn't fixed this problem after all these years!!! Jerry The smooth side of eclipse is as smooth as the photo rag. I use Paul Roark's curves for all my black and white prints. > I am a big fan of Photo Rag even having only used it a short time. TA> thanks Straight, so far. I've been doing this for only about 6 months. I've been chalking up results which were less than perfect to the image itself or my PS processing with levels, etc. But now I'm at the point of considering trying to experiment with the Randall curve a bit. My only limitation is time and paper. I have little of each right now. I'll be ordering some more paper soon. Just gotta work on that time factor. Any experiments that seem successful I'd love to hear about. In particular I want to see if I can get that same beauty I get from PR on ESBW. PR also seems to give me better graduated and detailed shadows too. Perhaps some curve adjustments with ESBW can yield me this.... Best regards, Richard mailto:richard@...
