Silverfast 6, sprintscan 120 & PS problem

Silverfast 6, sprintscan 120 & PS problem

2003-01-02 by frankg_photo <fh.gross@sympatico.ca>

Has anyone with a similar setup encountered this problem ?

I am using Silverfast Ai version 6.01 - the PS plugin version
(upgraded from the version 5.2 that was bundled with scanner)
Polaroid Sprintscn 120
Photoshop 6.01
Windows 98SE

Problem is that after the scanner finishes scanning, the little blue
progress bar shows that it is finished, then nothing happens !!! It is
almost frozen !
IT DOESNT BRING THE SCANNED IMAGE INTO PS

On screen the little box shows:
"Gray scanning" (i am doing a b&w neg, but it doesn't matter what scan
type).
The little Blue progress bar is complete.
A thumbnail of the image.
a Cancel button.
And the little aeroplane with moving propeller.

Now if I click the Cancel button, it will often do what was supposed
to happen - bring the image into Photoshop.

What do you think the problem is and what can I do about it ?
I've written to Lasersoft/silverfast & posted to their forum but no
replies.

thank you,
Frank

Hi Frank;

It might be a) not enough RAM or b)some qirk of your particular ##&%
@!! Windows 98SE setup. The Silverfast password should enable you to
go back and pick up the twain version (it comes with, on the CD so
you're not cheating) I would start there, maybe it'll work better,
and you can still use it through PS, there's no functional
difference I'm aware of, except the twain is available to any other
applications you might have as well-try it.

I've also been trying to figure out a SprintScan 120/SilverFast
peculiarity: why the SF6 Twain driver won't let me import a 48-bit color
image from my SS120 into Photoshop 7. It works fine with 24-bit and
gray-scale images but 48-bit images produce a consistent error saying
something about a module failure -- after which Photoshop locks up and must
be forcibly shut down and restarted. I tried reinstalling an earlier build
of SF6 but found that it produced the same error. After trying and retrying
a variety of Photoshop and SilverFast settings, I tried installing the SF6
plug-in and am gratified to find that it works properly with 48-bit imports.

I've been been using the Twain driver since SF5 because it allows me to
scan images into many other programs. I believe that there's no downside to
having both the Twain driver and the plug-in installed. I like that the
plug-in also works with LaserSofts new SFApp utility that launches
SilverFast as an independent application.

I'm uncertain about the usefulness of SF6's new features since I have other
Photoshop plug-ins that provide similar functionality, but its one big plus
is its considerably enhanced stability. Almost every SF5 session ended with
a lockup and a restart. SF6 pretty much just keeps rolling along.
