Jerry,

Have you tried Osprey? It has great blacks but they are a bugger to control.

In black and white I've used Hannemule Photo Rag, Somerset Velvet
Photo Enhanced, Epson Enhanced Matte and Eclipse papers. The
Somerset shifts the most toward green and the Eclipse the least.
However, the Hannemule prints the nicest, with the smoothest
tonality, in a virtual tie with the Epson, which is the cheapest but
not truly archival. For rich blacks, the Eclipse, Hannemule and Epson all come
through well. The Somerset blacks aren't quite as rich. The Hannemule is
creamier than either the Epson or the Eclipse Satine. Eclipse is the whitest but
that's not always preferable in my experience. . .

Hi Jerry,

What about the rest. In my personal tradeoff I can live with a black
that's not the deepest. I cannot live with a compromise in the
highlights. If the highlights don't glow - I don't want it. How is
Photorag on the highlights?

Yes, but after a few sheets the rollers on the printer gets smooth and
has to be cleaned. Also a bit too ivory colored for me.

Re: [Digital BW] Paper comparison

2003-02-01 by Jerry Olson

Truman, Photo Rag is THE paper to beat for outstanding quality inkjet
prints. The only reason I don't use it is that it is way overpriced in
my opinion, and is just too ivory. Snow scenes, for instance, just don't
look good on it. For them, I use Eclipse or Legion photomatte, the
brightest, whitest paper I've ever seen. I don't worry about longevity
anymore. Under normal room lighting, I've never seen fading with any
inks or papers. If any print ever fades I'll just reprint it and be done
with it.

Jerry

Eclipse is probably for you. It doesn't have the very deepest blacks
available, but they are good. It is pure white, so highlights look great
to me, on this paper.
