Ultrachrome - Photo versus Matte Black Differences

Ultrachrome - Photo versus Matte Black Differences

2003-02-01 by Miguel Angel Aleman <alemanma@bp.com>

Hello Everyone

I recently started experimenting with a number of fine-art coated-
papers while still using the photo-black ink on my Ultrachrome Epson
7600 printer. I am liking it so much, that I am seriously considering
a swith to the matte-black.

However, since this is an expensive proposition (due to all of the
ink that is purged/wasted during the switch), and since doing so will
preclude me from printing on glossy media (which I also like), I want
to make sure that the resulting improvement is worth it.

Could you please comment on your photo-versus-matte-black
experiences ?

Thanks, Miguel Angel Aleman

Hi Miguel,

I am using the Epson 2200 / Ultrachrome.
Made tests with Photo Black and Matte Black on Epson Archival Matte and some other matte papers.

I certainly prefer the Matte black because it results in higher density of blacks.

Hello Jo

Thanks for your feedback.

I just placed an order for a matte-black cartridge and for a number
of the Hahnemuhle's Coated Watercolor papers (William Turner, German
Etching and Torchon). The character that these papers impart into
some of my images is really enticing. I can't wait to see how much
better it can get with the matte-black.
