[Digital BW] 1290 VM curves with 1280?

[Digital BW] 1290 VM curves with 1280?

The 1290 curves will probably not work on the 1280 unless you use the 1290
driver. Some have tried this, but not having a 1290 or 1280, I'm not sure
where that issue stands.

The curves were written for 1440. The Photo Paper setting, however does
open up the 2880 capability.

For those who have used the 1290 dirver on the 1280, how much of a pain
was it to fool the 1280 into using the 1290 driver, or was it just a
matter of uninstalling the 1280 driver and installing the 1290 driver?

Thanks
Truman

Why uninstall? Can't you just install a "new" printer with a different
driver.

Well, despite all advice to the contrary, I decided to try the curves
anyway with the 1280 and 1280 driver (I don't know if it's possible to
use the 1290 driver on a mac, since it's all plug-n-play and
autosensing...)

The results are _good_ - much much better than I had gotten using
Paul's 1280 (mac or pc) curves. No posterization, richer blacks,
generally just fantastic. Even better than I had been getting with the
Boley curves.

I have only tried the NC EAM and PR curves so far, so I can't speak to
the other tones yet.

I tried it - a fresh install on my laptop. But somehow the plug and play
didn't detect a 1290 and the 1290 setup didn't recogonize the 1280
hardware. So there needs to be some hacking around. So anyone have the
secret?

No special hacking needed - after installing the 1290 "printer"
(software/driver) go to the properties of the printer and under the
Ports tab, select the port (e.g. LPT1) to which the printer is
connected. This automatically sends 1290 print jobs to that
port/printer.

I haven't seen any improvements in results printing on the 1280 with
a 1290 driver. I've used Paul Roark's 1290 curves on the 1280 and my
wedges aren't any better (still get some lack of linearity in the 70-
85% area) than they were with the 1280 curves.

Re: [Digital BW] 1290 VM curves with 1280?

I managed to do it by copying the 1280 CD to my hard drive. Then I
replaced the "drivers" and "monitor" folder of the 1280 with those of
the 1290 and installed the printer as normal using the setup as normal -
except from the hard drive. It stll thinks it's a 1280 and works fine.

I, however, didn't notice any difference on the step wedge using the
1290 curves compaired to the 1280 curves on the website. In fact I found
the "vmp-n3.acv" from the 1280 Neutral folder did a very nice job and
the 1280 version 13 cuves did a nice job. But the 1290 curves on the
1280 seem to be lacking in the back areas of the step wedge.

Cheers
