Black only printing on a Canon S750

Black only printing on a Canon S750

2003-02-09 by jeades947 <jeades1@sc.rr.com>

I am using a Canon S750 and I have discovered the wonderful world
of black Only printing of photographs;
or so I thought. I was running out of color cartridges too fast and
found a
newsgroup called DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com and
have
learned a lot. I read many of the messages and logged on to many
websites
mentioned in them. As a result, I discovered
http://www.cjcom.net/digiprnarts.htm which dealt with using only
black ink
for printing the images. It is a learning curve, I admit, but I
buckled down
and worked with it over the course of a few weeks till I became
familiar
with the technique. I started print images and noticed almost all of
them
has some color cast to them, but I chalked it up to the ink and paper
combination. Today I got a screen message from my printer that my
Cyan and
Magenta inks were running low. I wondered how this could be possible
because
I was using only black ink; or so I thought. Going back over
everything
carefully, I reexamined a vital printer setting I thought would not
be
necessary to set initially. One toggle for color management
was "Auto" and
"Manual" and I had it toggled as "Auto". Changing this to Manual did
not
seem to make any difference in the color cast of the prints, and now
I am
running out of color inks. If I take them out, the printer won't
print
anything on the paper at all, or if I tape over the ink sensor it
won't
print at all. Has anyone else had this same problem and solved it?
If so,
please send me email directly jeades1@... or you can post it
on this
newsgroup so all can benefit from your knowledge. Thanks in advance
for any
and all help you can give me with this dilemma.

I can only speak for my Epson printer, but maybe this will help...The
Epson slowly uses the color inks even during BO printing, but only
during the cleaning cycles, not on the print.

If the Cannon is using the colors on the print then you should be able
to see color dots with a loupe. That would be the first thing to
check. If there are color dots then either a setting is wrong or that
printer can't do true BO.

Clayton

Duh, how dumb can I get?

I checked all the printer settings and found one crucial one that I
failed to have changed. I was giving it paper profiles instead of
indicating I wanted to use plain paper for all settings so it would
use only black ink thinking I would be printing only text, which it
assumes to be only black ink. Now that I have found that error, I am
out of ink again and waiting for some bottles from MIS so I can
refill these cartridges. This will be my first attempt at refilling
this printer's cartridges, so wish me luck. I'll probably need to
buy some extra cartridges in case I mess these up refilling. Thanks
again for all the help you have given me. Before running out of ink
again, I was able to make a few Black Only prints. I still use the
front end of Gray Gamma 2.2 and then switch it to 15% dot gain
before printing and then switch it back to Gray Gamma 2.2 for saving
the file. I like to have the screen image look like the printed
image. If I left it at 15% dot gain, it would look much lighter than
the print. Thanks again.

Good show. Sounds like you're well on the way.

Good luck on the refills!

What is the back end setting?

I don't use any back end settings. I have a shadowboost curve that
raises the lower values from what it would be with the front end of
only 15% dot gain. I know I have still got a lot to learn but this
gives me consistent results with almost eny paper I use; which is
Epson Photo Paper, Office Depot Matte paper, and Office Depot Glossy
Photo Paper--and without any changes other that changing the front
end to 15% and the shadowboost curve and printing BO. I may be going
around my elbow to get to my thumb, but so far it works pretty good
for me still to be a new BO printer.

P.S. I like it and you like it and that's the only ones we need be
concerned about.
