There are at least 2 systems almost ready to ship (weeks, not months)
from Inkjetgoodies and Mediastreet.

What advantage do you expect from the 2100/2200 compared with the 1290/1280
when printing quadtone/hextone?

I don't know about the 1280 but the 2200 can print on 48 mil media
and it has a straight paper path. For certain art projects those
features can be quite useful.

Martin:

The only advantage I see would be that if I would buy a second 2100 for B&W I would have 2 same printers with same type of cartridges.
If one of the two breaks down I have a back-up.
Do not know if 2100/2200 has any better technical or quality performance compared to 1290/1280.

I considered this issue and opted to go with a 7500 as opposed to more
expensive (and chipped) 7600.

If there is a RIP that can control all 7 tones/jets separately, then that
would be great -- if affordable. More independently-controllable jets could
definitely be useful.

With the Epson driver, however, I'm not sure the 7th ink -- the light
black -- is going to have much positive impact.

Epson-driver/RGB "quad," and analogous hextone, workflows that usually use
partitioning curves loaded in Photoshop that are rather steep. This is how
ink jets are controlled. The RGB image files that the printer "sees" after
the application of the curves would probably be seen by the 2100/2200/7600
(UltraChrome/"UC") driver as composed of very saturated colors. As such, it
would likely withhold the light black as long as possible. So, in most RGB
workflows, I think the light black would play a minor role that would
probably not increase the quality of the print. It would probably be used
mostly in the dark shadows where the black is already used (and with good
quality).

I have not used a UC machine yet, and I'd bet that is the wave of the
future. However, in addition to a price differential there were some other
factors that caused me to go with the 7500 over the 7600.

One factor that would not apply in most situations is the avoidance of
chipped carts.

A second factor, however, was my concern over how the UC driver might react
to partitioning curves. Built-in cross-overs can be a source of trouble for
partitioning curves. Sometimes the built-in crossovers fight what the
curves are trying to do. It can cause unevenness in a grayscale ramp that
is hard to get rid of. So, the fewer crossovers the better, in my view.

(This is not a recommendation of the 7500. I have not yet had success with
it either, but for unrelated reasons.)

Using the 1280/VM MIS is not practical for me. After living with it
for 11 months, having to clear nozzles every day in my dry climate at
altitude, - well it just is not a pragmatic solution.

I've been using the 2200/IP5 for over two months now. I've had just a
few instances of banding caused by nozzles going out in middle of
print. So I had to reprint a total of five or six prints TOPS. The
nozzles are almost always clear, I think I've had to run maybe four
cleaning cycles on the 2200 in 2 1/2 months as opposed to 20-40 in
same time frame on the 1280/VM (as a guess). And that's all. Truely,
this printer Works in my environment, and I have finally found a
solution that is practical. I can turn it off for a few days and I
won't have serious clogging like I certainly would with 1280/VM.

I'm starting to suspect that the head is designed differently, maybe
with fewer right angle turns, or ?

The 2200 ink carts may be more $, but in the long run cheaper (for me)
than the VM ink, as I had to waste a lot clearing nozzles and throwing
away CFS units that went belly up, chips that would get zapped, etc.

It is true that the 1280/VM inkset/Paul's workflow gives dotless
highlights and some dots are visible in the IP5 prints- but you have
to look very hard to see this. It's well worth trading this and the
high cost of IP5 for a printer that just plain physically works in a
dry high altitude environment.
