QuadToneRIP - Oh My God

QuadToneRIP - Oh My God

2003-03-06 by Charles Bandes

Ok - so starting with Roy's program was painful. I had a really hard time at first (though Roy was insanely wonderfully helpful and got me up to speed after a flurry of email :) ) but wow, I mean WOW - it is working now, really really well. And he has a system for making curves that actually sorta makes sense to me. The upshot of this is that I made curves for my printer this afternoon all by myself (well, um, with the help of some email and spreadsheets from Roy) which are WORKING! Still need a little tweaking, and my curves are not as good as, say, Tyler Boley's or Paul Roark's, but considering that just yesterday I was describing myself as an "end-user doofus" I am delighted with the results I am getting now.

In an email to Roy a few minutes ago I said "Ok so I am jumping around my studio feeling like a curve-development god rather than an end-user doofus. Thank you!"

Anyway - once I get my curves working a little better I'll be thrilled to share them with anyone else who wants them (MIS-VM inks on a 1280) - I'd encourage everyone to try this system, it works, and it's free!! :)

Congratulations Charles! It must be very satisfying. I'd be
interested in attempting my own curves too. Where would I find Roy's
program? I didn't see it in the files section.

Thanks,

Tom Husband

Also check the threads here from Roy from the last week or so, there was a sudo command that needed to be used to make it work as well as some other tweakage.

You'll need Jaguar, Gimp-print 4.2.5 and Ghostscript to get started. Some people seem to have it running under Linux also for those unfortunate macless souls ;)

Thanks Charles but I guess I wasn't listening, this is Mac only.

Well, it's UNIX-only. It should work fine on Intel hardware running Linux or other UNIX systems. It's just that with Macs being the most common Unix systems out there right now that's probably what most people will be using for this.

I think for the moment at least Windows users are out of luck though.

Charles, you've certainly been a help getting the quirks of
the installation package worked out. Thanks.

Just as soon as I can I'll get a new install package with all
these fixes and a couple of other conveniences. I'm also
putting together a Linux set of files that should be easy to
install on various Linuxes.

Well, in that case I won't flush SuSE just yet. I finaly got to try
the 4.3.11 version of gimp-print; it's interesting in that it gives
you lots of control over each color and black, you could conceivably
come up with a set of curves that does exactly what we need for
quads, but no hextone control. It does have one huge glaring fatal
flaw-there's no way (that I could see anyway) to save your curve set
and apply it to another image. Perhaps a couple versions down the
road they'll take care of that. In the meantime, there's lots of new
stuff to occupy us.
