Newbie questions

2003-04-22 by surerock

Sorry for asking a newbie question I'm sure has been asked many
times, but. I'm new to the B/W inksets, but have used Mediastreets
Enhanced Generations Inks for quite some time. I want to use a CFS
for my B/W's also. I use the Epson 1280 for color & I am buying
another 1280 for my B/W's. When I first started looking into the
B/W inks I was aware of the Cone inks & system but not familiar with
the MIS inks & the curves such as yours. I was planning on buying
into the Cone system, but have since been thinking the MIS ink route
would be preferred.

The person that directed me to the MIS inks had previously used the
Cone inks & has switched to the FS Neutral inks & prefers them. My
thoughts are the Ultra-Tone inks are the way to go, the fact of being
able to print Matte (which I mainly use) or gloss, plus what seems
like better longevity (than some of the other MIS inks) and to be
able to print variable tones appeals to me. A few people are telling
me that I might be better off going with the Full Spectrum inks and
using the Image Export Plug in. They say that the Ultra-Tones &
Variable Inks would be harder to get consistent prints. My thoughts
are the curves should be consistent from print to print. I'm also
trying to decide which of the blacks would best serve me. Longevity
& deep blacks are both important to me & I would like to find the
best compromise between the two. By judging from prints I see on
the different websites I think I lean to a B/W print in the Neutral
range.

I certainly would appreciate any insight you might be able to lend
me. I will be very grateful for any advice that might save me time &
headaches

Newbie questions

2006-07-27 by igianni

I am a complete newbie at B&W printing, so I apologize in advance if my
questions appear stupid.

I am trying to find a cheap way to try B&W inkjet printing, and for
what I managed to gather the combination C86 + MIS inks seems the
easiest way to get into it; problem is: I can't source a C86 in the UK,
its successor is the D88 which seems to have different part numbers for
the catridges, does anyone know if MIS B&W inks for the C86 work with
the D88?

Another option would be to get a R220 + MIS inks, the R220 is easily
available, and if the results are as good (and it is as easy to use) as
the C86 + MIS I may go down that route, has anyone tried this option?

Finally MIS inks seems to be available only direct from the
manufacturer, I seem unable to source them in the UK, is anyone aware
of an UK distributor or, failing that, is there a product, available in
the UK, that can give similar results using reasonably cheap printers?

Thanks a lot

Igianni

I cannot comment on your printer choice question which I am sure will be
answered by the more knowledgeable members of this site, however I have had
experience purchasing inks from MIS and having them sent to the UK. Both
times I have done it so far it has been a very easy process, the only
downside being the potential wait whilst the parcel passes through Customs,
although even that is becoming shorter. I have also found MIS to be a
really helpful company to deal with both by e-mail and over the phone.
There are UK based alternatives such as Lyson and Permajet which might be
worth looking into, perhaps someone else can comment on their pro's and
cons, however I don't think you can go wrong with MIS.

Regards

David

There seems to be general agreement that the 220 is better than the
C86, and is highly recommended, especially with the MIS R2 inks.

Article #10 at the link below describes how to make a variable tone
inkset for the 220 using MIS inks.

Clayton
