a dedicated web site for this group?

a dedicated web site for this group?

2003-05-02 by Clark Thomas

I'm considering this concept of a web site
for this group, to offer additional ways
to show each other what we're doing.

I looked for domain names today, and
see "digitalBWprints.com" is available.

Could there be enough interest to justify
starting something like this? I'd be
willing to do much of it, but it'd
require content from many of us...
photos, screen dumps, descriptions,
etc. My ISP might be willing to donate
the space. What do you think?

What's wrong with:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint/

Judging from the lack of stuff there, I'd say no one's dying to develop
content for such a site.

I wrote Martin, the founder of the list [below].

We'll see what he says about starting a web site.

I see starting this very simply, and keeping
it simple. Erring on the side of too little
rather than too much. Kind if an experiment in
how we'd do it "if" we were going to...
Emphasis on content, with minimal coding (html).

I do several web sites now, and none of them take
much time. I do the Nashville Mac Users site:
www.macusers.com
the site for my low profile portrait photo business:
www.simplephotographs.com
Also the site for the neighborhood association and
residents at my summer lake house in Florida:
www.kingsleylake.org

You'll notice all three are similar in concept.
I'm not much interested in fancy bells and whistles
on web sites.

I wouldn't feel at all possessive about this site
either. Would prefer in fact, that we have several
people actively working on it, which would help us
all learn more too, hopefully.

I'm hoping that having to do some photos, and helping
people with some writing - will help me ingest the
content about printmaking. Doing the site is like
committing myself to the team. But I don't want to be
the captain or coach - water boy will suit me well
enough. And maybe a little cheerleading. -Clark

Nothing's 'wrong' with what we've got - but
I think it's fairly limited by the Yahoo
structure. The Yahoo structure is good for
what it's good for - but an open-ended
independent site could be a bonus!

I'm seeing articles, and tutorials, and step
by step descriptions with photos, and bios
with portraits of our people doing their
work.

I'm holding the goal, or concept - of having
it be as much like "being there" in person
with other printmakers. This would be VERY
rich if we can achieve it.

I'm "seeing it" which is why I feel obliged
to try to move it forward. I don't want to
push it on anyone though. I'll beat my drum
about it for awhile and see if it generates
some interest, and if so we'll move it
forward. If not, I'll let it go.

If I may add my two cents worth--I have learned so much about black
and white digital printing from this newsgroup that I would like
very much to see such a web site developed for even a closer
exchange of ideas and actual images showing the results. A
description of a procedure is good, but the resulting images says
and shows the end product. If voting has started, then count me in.

My point was, I don't think the structure of the Yahoo site, as rigid as
it is, it what's keeping stuff like you suggest from being created. For
instance, the idea of a FAQ for the group has come up more than once,
and everybody thinks it's a great idea, but no one ever volunteered to
create it.

Best of luck to you though, sincerely.
