New MIS black clogs

New MIS black clogs

2003-05-03 by Stephen Kobrin

I have been printing with a 1200 and the MIS VM inks since early
October without a problem. However, after putting in a new black
cart (I use prefilled carts)I have consistent clogs in the black ink
when I first turn on the printer. Up to now, they disappear with a
one or two cleaning cycles, but I concerned that the problem is going
to get worse over time. Furthermore, cleaning uses ink.

I recall some discussion of a new MIS black on the list which I did
not follow as closely. Is MIS using the new black in all of its
inksets? If so, this is a bummer. Is anyone else running into this
problem? Again, the only change is a new cartridge.

Would switching to the Gen 4 (?) black slove the problem? Any advice
appreciated. The only clog is in the black position -- the other
nozzel tests are consistently perfect.

Steve,

Does the new black ink have the "solvent" smell of the old VM/FS black? If
not, then it could be the new Eboni ink. MIS is eager to get rid of the old
VM/FS ink due to its co-solvent base that is often said to cause more
clogging.

I've been using Eboni for some time now with no problems, but some have
reported clogging issues. Some of the problems have been due to faulty
carts, others have related to the new ink's apparent sensitivity to
pollution by residual dye ink. I have not seen enough reports to know what
other patterns of problems may exist. I'm about to load another cart of
Eboni now that is from a different/new batch of ink. Hopefully there are
not inconsistencies among ink batches.

Re: [Digital BW] New MIS black clogs

2003-05-03 by Stephen Kobrin

Paul,

After checking my supply, I am not sure what is in there. I ordered
new inks from MIS a few weeks ago, but now realize that the black I
put in was a few months old as I have both packages of the newer
black on the shelf. The new boxes are marked MIS QVM black. As the
older package was sealed, shelf life issues should not be a problem.
I wonder if there is an issue with this particular item. It took
three cleaning cycles to clear it this morning. Do you think it
would be worth installing one of the newer carts on the chance that
the one that is in there is defective? It is unlikely that the one
in the printer is the Eboni ink given its age.

So, I seem to have jumped to a conclusion based on others' comments
on the list that may not be justified. The problem may have nothing
to do with Eboni. It is strange though as I (knock wood) have not
had problems to this point.

I do remember the smell of the older inks when I installed them.
However I switched both black and the color carts at the same time,
so hard to tell what I smelled.

As always, thanks for your help.

Steve

Re: [Digital BW] New MIS black clogs

2003-05-03 by John/Julie Gittins

Steve,

A couple of things that may be relevant.

A while back I noticed that prefilled MIS carts that came with loose shrink-wrapping
were very "at-risk" for clogs, versus those with tight shrink-wrap (which very rarely
clogged). Now, if one comes with a loose wrapping, I send it back to MIS for
replacement.

So far, I've only been using the co-solvent K carts. After getting an order of K carts
right around the time when MIS announced the switchover to Eboni K, I called to
ask if the carts I'd received were Eboni. They said they didn't know, because there
were still many co-solvent carts on their shelves, and the labels on the boxes don't
differentiate. Later I found out that they can, if necessary, call the ink-maker and
find out whether a given Lot # is Eboni or not, which they did. By that time, with the
concerns about Eboni surfacing, I wanted to stay with the co-solvent K until I finished
a printing project -- and MIS was able to supply me with co-solvent K carts -- I don't
know if they also had Eboni ones on hand for the printer I was using.
