the CIS switch

2003-05-21 by chrismendephoto2003

Martin, now that you've so nicely and quickly answered me previous
question, here's another. How do I best keep the old CIS with inks
attached usable for a while? I assume by drying off the ink on the
bottom of the cartridges, taping them carefully (what kind of tape?),
then storing with all elements level with eachother. The bottles are
about half full. They were working fine. No clogging ever of any
consequence - I've been lucky.
Thanks again for the prompt help. And I do have those covers\u2044

Either buy the acriylic EZ-plugs from a no-more-carts distributor for
$15 (Actually, buy two sets since the plastic cracks under presense of
the solvent in the old VM ink- don't know about PT or other new ink).
This is the easiest method to install but more expensive and it falls
apart. The diameter of the pins is smaller than the MIS rivit solution
so it won't stress the rubber seal as much.

Or just buy some MIS rivits for 2 cents each and plug the holes. Pry
then out with your thumbnail or a dull screwdriver. Remember that over
time the rivits will expand the seal a bit- they are bigger than the
nipples of the printhead. The EZ-Plugs are the same size.

I always kept the carts a little higher than the bottom of bottles. I
put the carts in a ziploc bag but I do NOT seal it. This will save
your carpet if you knock into it. And I stored the front end of carts
down (side facing into printer).

Thanks again, Jim. I used the nipples that came with the flush
cartridges, and have done essentially what you suggested. (I felt the
flush carts were less important and taped them with scotch tape until
I get some electrical tape).

I only used the flush carts twice; once on the 1160. So I'm not sure
if taping will be okay. I do know that Bill Bergh way back when was a
fan of scotch taping everything; he told me a story about how he had a
drawer full of ink carts that they popped in and out of a 1160 to test
and that they just scotch taped them and had no problem. I never got
it to work for me it never stuck.

I wasn't aware that flush carts now ship with a set of nipples...maybe
you refer to an outfit you bought from Jon Cone? He likes to ship you
complete-all-you need philosphy- so maybe he now ships out EZ-plugs
too. With the new ink it may not crack the plugs; but if it does it
should still have a lifetime warranty. I had two sets as I said- I
kept one in the mail out for replacement and used the other<g>. I went
through about five sets of plugs this way. Strange they never fixed
the issue.

Don't use rubber bands on the EZ-plugs like some suggest- it can
distort the seals and also worsen the cracking. The carts don't need it.
