Permajet papers

2003-05-23 by Alessandro Pardi

I have the feeling this has already been asked, but couldn't find related
messages in the archives, so here's the question: anyone tried the Permajet
papers MIS now sells? They say it's Hahnemule base with a different coating.

thanks,
Alessandro

I recieved my sample pack from MIS today. I have only tested the
Portrait Classic 300gsm so far, but it looks exactly like PhotoRag
except for a slight difference in texture, so you're probably right that
it's Hahnemüle base.

I'll probably stick with 'real' Hahnemüle - my local art supplier orders
them directly from Germany for a lower price than the Permajet papers
are selling for. Since I'm in Norway that makes the shipping more
convenient as well.

Thanks Daniel. Being in Italy, the real thing may be cheaper for me, too.
Given that the two papers seem to have the same base and (reportedly) a
different coating, it may be interesting to compare them with respect to
flaking, which I hear is a minor issue with PhotoRag.

That different coating still has to be checked. I bet it is just
the same. Hahnemuhle can't get the same margin on raw stock like
they do on coated paper. There was a shortage in supply with
Hahnemuhle not so long ago. Texture differences exist between
batches and in the papermaking there is even a difference between
the first part of the run and the end when the felt has gathered
too much lint.

Permajet papers

2004-01-11 by Richard Smallfield

Hi,
I'm (in New Zealand) rather urgently searching around for a lightfast paper with a surface similar to Epson Heavyweight Matte and am having trouble finding suppliers in where I live. (No one I've found so far stocks Hahnemmuhle Photo Rag, although I've asked that they look into it).

But ... one supplier does do Permajet papers. I wondered which Permajet paper would be closest to HWM/EEM and how people have found them.

I did a search of the archives for Permajet Matt Plus and Permajet Portrait Classic, but nothing came up.

thanks in advance,
Richard

Hi Richard
I am also in NZ and have had no joy getting Hannemuhle Papers here. I
would be interested if you do find a supplier

RE: [Digital BW] Permajet papers

2004-01-11 by Ed Mathews

Hi Richard,
I've used Permajet Matt Plus and found it to be very similar to
Epson HWM, but maybe a little brighter and just a tad heavier. The
color balance seems to be just a tad warmer also. Overall, I liked it
better then HWM myself, and it is similar enough.
I also ordered a Permajet sampler from MIS a while back, and while
some of the papers are nice, I didn't find most of them smooth enough
for good detail in smooth tones of people pictures. The Matte Plus and
Portrait Classical are my favorites and the exceptions, having the
smoothest surfaces. The Portrait Classic is really very nice, very
expensive also.

Thanks,
Ed

It's my understanding that PermaJet Portrait Classic IS actually
Hahnemuhle Photo Rag. So you actually DO have it.

Yes, it was the best. Permajet claims it is from an English mill. I
haven't seen a final name or release date for it yet.

RE: [Digital BW] Re: Permajet papers

2004-01-13 by Paul Roark

I'm just finishing writing curves for UT2 & Permajet Portrait Classic --
which is PhotoRag, as I understand it. Great paper, but it would be a lot
better if it didn't flake.

Hope you guys as Hahnemuehle get that aspect under control.

Permajet has a new paper I've tested that looks just like PhotoRag but does
not flake. When it comes out, it'll be the top of the matte paper heap as
far as I can tell -- a non-flaking PhotoRag twin. Nice.

Another request for the H. engineers -- an RC paper line with a buffered
paper core to give Epson some competition for their Premium barrier/RC paper
line. There is no reason these papers can't be archival. The Wilhelm ">200
year" dark storage rating or a similar "guarantee" of longevity is needed
for too much of the market to ignore it. Calcium carbonate is cheap.

Colin,

I suspect Permajet is going to officially introduce its new paper line at
the Las Vegas PMA show next weekend. I doubt the papers at Fotospeed are
the same. Permajet seems to be working directly with a mill to get a unique
coating.

They will also announce an upgrade of VT Blax (to an UT-class inkset).

I'll be over there with Permajet and Jobo helping them demo the goodies.
