Anyone ever try using the IJC software on windows using a mac emulator like virutual mac or one of the others? If so, how did it work? which emulator did you use? I queried BowHaus about when the w2k version might be available and they would only comment that the next version will be another mac one. what do you think??? tom o'connell
2003-06-04 by Daniel Staver
I checked out the possibility of running an emulator, but I could only find 680x0 processor Mac emulators, not PowerPC which would be required for IJC. I'm not sure if a PowerPC MAC emulator even exists... I'm seriously considering buying a secondhand mac for using IJC. It might be cheaper than buying a license for an emulator even if one were to exist. But right now it seems like I might be able to get good results with QuadToneRIP, so I'll see what I can do with that for now. -- Daniel Staver http://daniel.staver.no > -----Original Message----- > From: Tom OConnell [mailto:TomOC@...] > Sent: 4. juni 2003 07:53 > To: DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com > Subject: [Digital BW] IJC on w2k ...mac emulation??? > > > Anyone ever try using the IJC software on windows using a mac > emulator like virutual mac or one of the others? > > If so, how did it work? which emulator did you use? > > I queried BowHaus about when the w2k version might be available and > they would only comment that the next version will be another mac one. > > what do you think??? > > tom o'connell > > > ------------------------ Yahoo! Check http://www.powermax.com Many of their $100 dollar systems would work with IJC...you will just have to add some RAM and some type of USB support for your printer...either a card or a keyspan adapter. Otherwise I would recommend looking into either: 1) the original wallstreet powerbooks...some of these are sub $500. They include usb and also have an on board ethernet port...which may not be a given in some of the $100 color desktop machines...you will also not need to get a monitor. http://www.powermax.com/cgi-global/generate.cgi?p=C-U53898 Or 2) one of the Blue and white G3's http://www.powermax.com/cgi-global/generate.cgi?i=PM_CU_G3_BW&t=Blue++&+Whit e+G3 You won't have to add anything other than a monitor to these Robert

A Firewire/USB Zip Drive might be a solution for files less than 750Mb, after that it's time to fire up da burner! BC

Tom, a couple of thoughts on emulator alternatives: - I use an ancient pre-G3 Mac (8500) to drive OPM and the 2200 really flies. On that same machine printing through the Epson driver and Photoshop is slow as molasses - as expected. The point is that OPM can be extremely efficient on old hardware that normally would be rejected by todays speed standards. And, btw, I drive my 9500 / OPM with an iBook! - If you already have an Ethernet network with your PCs, adding a Mac should be no problem. I haven't done it myself (don't own a PC) but, I believe it's easy to do. Antonis --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "Tom OConnell" <TomOC@s...> wrote:

Am I missing something here?
Sounded to me like we're talking about moving files from a Wintel machine
to a Mac.
Aren't the zip disk formats different?

tiff / jpeg graphics file formats are universal, they were DESIGNED to be cross platform. There's no problem reading cross platform formatted Zip disks from Mac to PC ... been doin' it since 1998. The only difference is the collection of 'extra' files Macs annoyingly ad to the disk ... a WinTel machine will ignore those files though. BC

As long as your talking jpeg or tiff files they'll read regardless of Mac or PC formatting of the Zip disk. BC

So, Billy, not to flog a dead horse here but just to make sure I've got
this straight:
If I've got a zip drive hooked up to a Wintel and another zip drive hooked
up to a Mac, I can take a zip disk, copy jpegs and/or tiffs from the Mac
onto the zip disk then put that disk in the Wintel zip drive and read it?
Many Thanks, wiping the egg from my face,
David

That is correct, but make sure you format the disc for PC. Mac can read both PC and MAC formatted Zips. PC can only read PC formatted discs. Thus format for PC, throw in a mac, throw on a tif, eject throw into PC and copy over. Easy. --- David Jackson <lagniap@...> wrote: > So, Billy, not to flog a dead horse here but just to > make sure I've got > this straight: > > If I've got a zip drive hooked up to a Wintel and > another zip drive hooked > up to a Mac, I can take a zip disk, copy jpegs > and/or tiffs from the Mac > onto the zip disk then put that disk in the Wintel > zip drive and read it? > > Many Thanks, wiping the egg from my face, > > David > > > At 02:22 PM 6/4/03 -0500, Billy Cobb wrote: > >As long as your talking jpeg or tiff files they'll > read regardless of Mac > >or PC formatting of the Zip disk. > > > >BC > > > David Jackson > > > Voice: (504) 865-5264, weekdays > (504) 269-3908, evenings, weekends > > Fax: (504) 862-8455 > Email: djackso1@... > > This email is a natural product made from 100% > recycled pixels.Variations > and inconsistencies in grammar and spelling enhance > its individual charm > and beauty and this email should not be considered > defective or flawed. > Apocryphal elements, errors in tact or accuracy > which may have occurred > during the process of transmission are a result of > this natural process and > are not the fault of the sender. > > > > > > > > > > > __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Or, if as with myself, you can't remember such things, there are relatively inexpensive programs for the PC that will allow it to read mac talk. As I recall Data-Viz was one vendor that I used in the past. Roger

That is correct, but make sure you format the disc for
PC. Mac can read both PC and MAC formatted Zips. PC
can only read PC formatted discs.
Thus format for PC, throw in a mac, throw on a tif,
eject throw into PC and copy over. Easy.

I just bought a Mac (desktop G3) so I could work with IJC-OPM. My plan is to use my portable hard-drive (Kanguru), which has drivers for both PC and Mac, to transfer files from PC to G3 for printing. John Gittins

Yeah, I think used G3's can be had for a few hundred or so.
Maybe some kinda switch to timeshare your monitor ? How
will you get files over to the Mac ? Burning CDs seems
pretty painful.
Good luck, John

The Powerbase RAM is limited to a measly 160 mbytes--and I have only 144 Mb installed. However my 2200 prints with OPM quite well (with OS 8.6). When running OPM I do have to quit all other apps since it alone uses about 113 Mb. But hey, it works. Fortunately my Powerbook (Lombard)--faster and with much more RAM--is also available for printing. Phil

thanks, Antonis and everyone else... I'm very space constrained at the moment. I thought there was more out there in the way of mac emulators...I can't even find any that emulate OS X... I was trying not to add another computer...if I do, a printer will have to go for now. I think I may look at a used power book or iBook. We have our pc's and my wife's mac (not anywhere near my darkroom) on a wireless network that seems to make file transfers totally easy (in fact the whole network was a no-brainer...plug and play 3com adapter and it worked fine with all the pc's and the airport...nice). off to ebay and used ibooks <g>. tom --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "Antonis Ricos" <antonisphoto@y...> wrote: > Tom, > > a couple of thoughts on emulator alternatives: > > - I use an ancient pre-G3 Mac (8500) to drive OPM and the 2200 really flies. > On that same machine printing through the Epson driver and Photoshop is > slow as molasses - as expected. Thanks for the info. However, I'm in the UK and I keep forgetting that OPM doesn't even support the 2100. I don't know if the 2100 can be made to identify itself as a 2200. I did once install the 2200 driver to get the velvet art setting and that worked except for the status monitor. I'm really envious of this OPM, though!
