Which Inkset?

Which Inkset?

2003-06-18 by baduerr

I have been using MIS's original VM inks on a 1160 and 99% of the
time I use the neutral curve. The resulting prints are nice but
seems to lack the drama that I was able to achieve in the wet
darkroom. I am wondering if another inkset would give the result
that I am looking for, namely deep netural blacks and punch (what
ever that means).

I'm considering MIS's utra-tones, FS-N, or one of Cone's inksets. I
don't need the tone options of the utra-tones but am more intrested
in a neutral to cool inkset. Also, I don't want to go through the
expense of purchasing special printer drives just to find out later
that I don't like the result. Lately, I have been using QuadTone
Rip 2.0 with very good result.

Could I use QuadTone Rip with the Cone inks?

I guess my basic question is:

"Ignoring the issues of print drivers, long term print fading, or the
need to vary tone, which inkset will produce deep neutral, or
slighlty cool, blacks (on EAM)."

I know that a lot of you have already faced the inkset issue so I
would like tap into your experiences and knowledge.

Thanks, Brad

Well if Jerry Olson was still with us he would suggest switching to the
Gen4 Black from media street. It is a dye/pigment hybrid and jerry
used it with the VM ink set in place of standard MIS black.
Inkjetmall's Piezotone Black Black might also be worth considering.
Both of these will give you better blacks at the expense of longevity
(because of the dye). Another option would be switching to the
Ultratones with Photo black and printing on gloss or luster finish
papers. The blacks are much more intense using these options.

Robert,

The "standard" MIS black has recently been replaced by Eboni (for both
FS and VM) which is claimed to be a deeper black. Does your comment
apply to the older MIS black or to Eboni?

What inks to use is certainly hard to decide without trying them.
I can answer that QuadToneRIP will work with any inks
including Cone's but you will have to work on calibrating each
variation.
