Speed Graphic: List Recommendation Needed

Speed Graphic: List Recommendation Needed

2003-07-18 by Lil

I've just been given an old Speed Graphic. Yes, I know there aren't any new ones ;-), but this one is ~really~ old, with the Kalart rangefinder mounted on the side and a Zeiss Tessar lens. It's been sitting in a case, in a shed, in deepest Florida, for upwards of 10 years. And yet, the gubbins, filthy though they are, seem to be working.

Anyway, can anyone recommend a list group where I can learn more about this camera? I've already found the relevant websites, thanks.

Lil

have you gone to www.graflex.org ? there used to be a list on there (along
with everything you ever wanted to know about speed graphics).

http://graflex.org/helpboard/

And more general large format lists (with useful archives)

at:
http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a?topic_id=1547

and also

www.f32.net

Very simply, you can still use it with the ground glass on the back, even if
the rangefinder isn't working. Though they are pretty simple and are
adjusted for the lens on the camera (and have to be re-adjusted for
different lenses. all sorts of info on that at graflex.org).

Depending on the model it may have a focal plane shutter as well as the
shutter the lens is attached to. The former are quite often out of whack on
cameras that haven't been serviced. The shutter on the lens may or may not
be okay.... old lubricants gum up. See how the different speeds sound.
Often running through them and firing it off 20 or 30 times loosen them up.
I'm guessing it's around a 135mm lens?

You just need a few film holders and film and away you go!

Oh - lots of info here too:

http://www.largeformatphotography.info/ tons of stuff from how to load
holders to dark cloths etc etc

Thanks for the advice, Tim.

The lens is a 120mm, and I have two 120 rollbacks and lots of film holders. The bad news is that it's 3.25x4.25, which is no longer sold. No way do I have the facilities to trim sheet film to fit! It's also one of the models with a back shutter, one more thing to worry about. I can hardly believe Joe Rosenthal used one of these to take that Iwo Jima shot.

Have you thought about taking a stab at cutting 4x5 sheets down? It's not
really that hard. You need a small trimmer with an adjustable stop, and a
totally dark place to work. Sacrifice a sheet of film to the light gods to
use as a setup pattern, set the cutter stop for one of the dimensions, wipe
off the work surface of the cutter and be sure it's dry, wash your hands
thoroughly and be sure they're dry, turn out the lights and cut all sheets
down to one correct dimension (one sheet at a time), put them back in their
light tight box, turn on the lights, reset the cutter stop, turn out the
lights and run the sheets through again to cut the second dimension. The
fit of sheet film in a holder is never perfect, so if your cuts are off by
a few thousandths or even a few hundredths it won't matter. Just be sure
you don't cut off the film identification notches, as they help you
determine which side is the emulsion side when you go to load the holders
in the dark.

Give it a try, you might find it's not nearly as tough as you imagine it to
be. You want to be careful not to scratch the film surface, but remember
that you don't enlarge this film as much as you do 35mm or even 120, so if
you do end up with some micro scratches here and there it may not even show
on a print.

Cheers,
Kip

I just emailed lil of list - you can get it at

http://jandcphotography.com/OtherSizes.htm

in B&W. J&C/Efke?forte 200 is a nice film, especially in the sheet version.
And there is another place I can't find right now.

Ilford makes HP5 in 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 - a few places stock it, or can get it on
special order - actually, B&H has it in stock:

i=335&Submit.x=45&Submit.y=16

these guys also have some (rather more expensive)

Don't know where you are in FL, but if around Orlando stop by Orlando
Camera Exchange on Fairbanks in Winter Park. I know Gregg there has
some 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 film holders and even two Speed Graphics in stock.
They only sell used cameras and equipment but have a very high end
(Hassy, Leica, Nikon, Canon) inventory. I've gotten to where I almost
never pay for new equipment. Too many deals on used out there.
