Roy,

Good to know that, so we can skip the first part. Thank you for
any help you can give but I guess my friend has the qualities to
do the job. He is an architect/programmer of software systems to
drive medical x-ray equipment etc and the software to interprete
the output data. I did gather the Q&A in on the QTR installation
so far and that will help too.

Is there a potential problem that SuSE already has installed
Gimp-print ? It can drive the 9000 already.

Ernst,

There is no problem with co-existing with any other version of
gimp-print. All the programs and all the PPD files for QuadToneRIP
have different names than the base gimp-print product.

Roy,

After 150 minutes we are ... no Gert-Jan is at a point where the
curves have to be installed. One way or another "cups-config" is
a command that isn't so common in the SuSE distribution. Earlier
in the building of the QTR he could edit the data file itself
instead of using "cups-config" but it has to be used frequently
in the curve installation so there must be another way. Any idea
how ?

Most changes were the addition of -lm as described by Daniel.

Solved, the default SuSE installation doesn't use it but it can
be added from the CD's.

200 minutes and the Yast2 test file can be printed. For the test
the default 7500 curves were changed to 9000 curves internally
and by name.
We call it a day, have no time for curve making in the next days
but this was quite fast after all. Hope to do something with
curves next weekend.
The Gimp-print menu doesn't show the setup yet but that is
something I have seen a cure for somewhere.

Ernst,

Looks like you guys are moving right along.
Keep us posted. There may be various nuances that
come up with Linux I'm less familiar with.

I have to ask Gert-Jan what he has done in total as the speed he
types commands and checks where the compiling strands is
unbelievable. He is not even a Linux expert, 90 % of what he does
is Windows developments (and some RiscOs + Psion dev in his spare
time).

What would be a nice undertaking is to make a special
photographers Linux distribution on a CD-ROM. Not the inflated
distributions like SuSE pro but a very lean Debian or Mandrake
with the Gimp, Sane for scanning, CUPS + Gimp-print + QTR for
printing, the demo of Vuescan and if it ever happens a Linux port
of Qimage (Demo). Possibly Samba for print serving. A webbrowser
to load the latest upgrades in graphic software from a dedicated
site. Main thing missing now is ICM control for colour printing
etc but on the other hand if it is just an in- and output system
in the workflow then a P2P in PS on the images to be printed
would be enough. I think GIMP has a ICM plugin meanwhile so it
could even be done in the same system. The distribution could be
called something like "Photix". Must be much easier to install
that way. No invitation for someone to do the job but more that
I'm convinced that Linux is really at a stage that it can deliver
all the goods needed and for an unbeatable price.

I'll try to get a summary of what has been done here and what
still has to be done.

I also read somewhere the PS now runs under a unix-windows emulator - not
seenany results of anyone trying it though
