Printing B&W digitally.

2003-08-08 by NiteFrog

Hello All,

I have printed traditional B&W years ago and now I am getting back
into it but digitally.

Where is the best place to pick up some tips and techniques? I have
been trying to print via the printer but it just doesn't seem to look
right. The prints look a little flat, doesn't have the pop as a
silver print. Maybe it is just me. For color they come out dead on.

But I am having a heck of a time with B&W. Please advise where one
can go to get a ton of info / tips / techniques on this topic.

Also I have a 1270 printer and 7600 printer. I am planning on
converting the 1270 to a dedicated B & W printer. What inks would
one use for the 1270 and long print life is also important in the
decision.

Thanks,

Kev

I don't know about the 1270, but I have a 9600 which, except for the width, is identical to the 7600. I have been printing since before 1960, and doing it quite well. I am now able, with the 9600, to get better, and more predictable results from my printing than ever before. You've got go get very decent or better scans or better from your film. This is your basic starting point. After that, Photoshop will provide all of the controls, plus many more, that you would be use to having in the darkroom. It is essential that you apply all of your knowledge about darkroom printing to the Photoshop process. The basic tools are certainly different in the digital world. But the concepts are not. If you're familiar with the Zone system, or any other method that provides a methodical approach to photography, be sure to apply that knowledge. And, just like the darkroom, you'll be throwing away a lot of paper. But, if you keep thinking about what you're doing, every piece of trash will
be closer to where you want to go than the last.

I'm having more fun, and potential profit, from the digital darkroom than I ever had in the dark darkroom. And I enjoyed that process greatly.

Good luck,

TB

BW digital printing is a rather complex undertaking and there's lots
to learn. There is a series of articles at my web site with good
information for getting started (see link below). Keep reading in
this forum over time and you'll get a lot of questions answered. Good
luck!

Clayton
