The price at dabs.com for the 1160 is L225.60 with VAT and L192 without VAT. Has anyone ever tried having a friend ship one of these the US? Were there any problems? Does anyone know whether or not this price, with overseas shipping figured in, represents a good value? Best, David At 11:37 AM 8/28/03 +0000, you wrote: >But they told me they will not ship to US. Like those sold in the UK these are made for 240V power. If you have 110V supply you would need a step-up transformer... Peter Marquis-Kyle www.marquis-kyle.com.au

It weighed just over 10kg. Based on this, if you go to http://www.royalmail.com/portal/default/all/home;jsessionid=0CTCMNVYU2 TFWCRAZRMEOSQKEDGFMQ2K? paf_gear_id=100002&paf_gm=content&paf_dm=full&paf_gear_state=con_conte nt&xmlPath=/docContent/xml/generalContent/Postal_prices.xml&_requestid =327506 and click on "postal calculator" you will find that, with insurance it will cost about GBP75. Then there are customs and duties in the US! You may need a wire wound transformer on top of that as others have suggested. I guess ebay is a better option. Maybe I should set up a container shipment from the UK? Colin

Is the 1160 reaching legend status? I've been using the Piezo inks for three years. With the 1160, I had clogs and banding. I switched to the 1280 and the problems virtually disappeared. Think 1280 I have an opportunity to purchase a little-used 1160 for $215 total from a member of this list, but I do wonder about the "legend" status of the 1160. Should one still be looking at this printer or not? It is still a preferred purchase over either the 1280 or the 2200? It was suggested to me that if I wanted to do Black Only printing (which I was going to start off with) that I would be better off with a 1280. If I'm looking to set up a dedicated Quadtone printer, is this model a better choice than one of the newer ones? Any thoughts? Hi, I can't tell anything about the 2200, but I use an 1160 since 2 years with Full Spectrum inks, and I think its an inexpensive printer that gives very nice results. I once compared a print made on a 1290 with the same print made on the 1160, and the 1290 gives a slightly finer dither pattern, so overall if the 1160 is - lets say - 90% of the actually highest possible quality with inkjet prints the 1290 would be at 95 percent. And 100 percent? I don't know, maybe an Iris printer, I've never seen one :-) For the money the 1160 is great and good enough for excellent b&w prints, but I think its not a magic machine either. Built quality and quality control is probably higher on the 1290 and of course on the 2200. They are probably also faster. So I guess no need to create legends... regards Bernie

Hello David, >It was suggested to me that if I wanted to do Black Only printing >(which I was going to start off with) that I would be better off >with a 1280. I don't use either one (I use an 870) but have seen beautiful BO prints from 1160 and 1280. I've never seen a comparison (same print on both), but the 1160 is certainly capable. Some of the 1280's were even new or refurbished. Is there some reason why a used 1160 is valued as high as a 1280? Is it because of the non-chipped carts, or is it perceived as a better printer even though the 1280 prints at 2880 dpi, 6 inks, and probably improved engineering. A puzzlement to me. Don

I use an 1160 and 1280. The 1160 is simpler -- only 4 inks and non-chipped carts. So, when I'm playing around with new inkset ideas, it's less work. The 1280, however, is a better printer. Not only is the 2880 resolution valuable for RC papers, but the printer is also smoother at 1440. This is not just due to the light inks. The black ink dither pattern or dot size seems significantly better. The 1280 can also lay down more ink. With Eboni I can get a 1.7 dmax on EEM at 2880. The 1160 can't do this. I'm starting to move to inksets that won't work on the 1160 at all. So, while I've been a big fan of the 1160, it's now in semi-retirement. Paul http://www.PaulRoark.com
