Image Database Software

2003-08-28 by jamesalvis

I would appreciate hearing the views and experience of users of image
database software such a Adobe Photoshop Album, IMatch 3, ACDSee, or
other programs, pro and con, particularly as an archive for images
where the primary manipulation will be done in Photoshop 7.
How useful? What is the best choice now? Thanks in advance.

Jim,

If you are looking for Mac software to keep track of you images, check
out iview ( http://www.iview-multimedia.com ). The pro version will
index and allow you to annotate you image files.

I have ACDSee and "Image Viewer" on my Mac G4. Neither is totally
satisfactory and I use both depending on what I need to do.

I you are running a windows platform look at a freeware package called
Ifrans View. You can get it from Tucows.

Jim, I have ACDSee, and according to my inquiry from tech support, there is
no means of backing up the data file.

How big a database?
Extensis Portfolio and Cantos Cumulus should definately be on your
list. Even Irfan View on PC or iView Media Pro on the mac side (iPhoto
works but is slower).

The data has to be in a file somewhere so i can believe you can not
back it up! Even if you can not identify the exact file you can as
lease copy the data path to a CD ROM or another hard drive. If ACDsee
is really correct about securing the data, then look for some other
software.

As I noted in a earlier post check out iview (
http://www.iview-multimedia.com ) for the Mac or Ifrans view (from the
Tucows site ) for the PC. iview is used by a lot of pros to build
image databases and you can make annotations to individual images.
Also you can password protect the image database files.

I recently installed Adobe Photoshop Album and am extremely pleased
with it. I was desperate to get my mass of pics, from digicam
snapshots to serious BW neg scans, under control. The design is
brilliant, in that you can create any number of tags (categories and
sub categories), and assign any number of tags to an image. Tags can
be assigned to images en masse (to groups of selected images with a
single drag/drop). Later you can select any tag or group of tags and
instantly see the images belonging to that filter combination. You
can also select a date range by dragging a slider and instantly see
what is in that range. It's a great organizer, and also has all sorts
of consumer oriented abilities like creating web pages, albums, slide
shows, etc. Annotations can be added to images.

While it's a great organizer, it's definitely consumer oriented and
doesn't have any features for the fine art photographer. If you sell
prints and/or show your work regularly you might want to have a look
at "Itrak" on my web site (there's a demo version).

Itrak was written expressly for fine art photographers, with special
features for gallery or art show exhibitors. It uses a "portfolio"
system where each portfolio has a master database of original images,
such as a negative, and a related database of prints made from that
original. Prints can be assigned to consignment groups going to a
gallery or art show, and reports can be printed with thumbnail images
to be used as an inventory for the gallery owner. It keeps track of
sales, prices, commissions, etc. Basically, every negative, and every
print made from that neg, is cataloged and tracked (Itrak -> Image
Tracker). You can see immediately how many prints you've made and
where they are, whether they sold, who bought them, etc. There's more
but that should give you an idea what it's all about.

Regards,
Clayton

IMatch has my vote. Very powerful data base that uses a unique
category system. It can handle raw files and just about any other
file. The support is excellent too. Right up there with Qimage.

Jim
My first post here, so be kind

I have been looking for a good package to do slide shows. generally I
want a program that will allow me to put together a slide show with
the following;

1. music in multiple cuts
2. generally and individually variable transitions,
3. generally and individually variable projections times
4 Lets me choose the resolution and file size to project

I am looking at four different programs.

Adobe Photoshop Album
Microsoft Movie Maker II (only for Windows XP
AcdSee5
Magix Video Deluxe 2

Here is what I have found so far.

Adobe Photoshop Album
PRO - Easy to use. Does not take long to build a slide show. has
captions, etc.

PRO - Lets you pick the file size AND projects that size. Great
resolution through an LCD projector.

PRO - Gives you lots of options for saving, burning the show.

PRO - Will write the show as a PDF file which can be used by almost
any computer. If the subject computer will read a PDF file, you are
in business.

Pro - I recently did a digital slide show with 397 images each approx
4 meg. The PDF was/is quite large (1.5 gig or so), but it does work.

CON - Has a limited supply of transitions and you can only pick one
for the whole show.

CON - you can only use one music file. No dragging and droppiung
multiple files. It has one and plays that one over and over and over.
If you want to add more/different/longer music YOU must merge the
music files yourself. The program dose NOT do that for you.

CON - You cannot vary the length of the projection time. This is a
problem for me because I like to vary the time and transition effect.

Ocerall , I like the program but it lacks some features I need. I
hope ADOBE is working on those areas because the program does a super
job of actually projewcting the image.

Microsoft Movie Maker 2
Great program. Uses the timeline and storyboard modes very
effectively. Has lots (Tons) of different transitions and effects to
allow you to project your slides and/or video

Pro - Easy to use and fairly intuitive. Works for video and/or audio.

Pro - Will play multiple music cuts

Pro - Lots or transitions. Can be set generally and then varied
individually between slides

Pro - Same for display times.

Con - So far I haven't been able to get it to write to DVD at a real
high quality. If that happens, then this is the program I want to
use. But, it really isn't a database.

I'll describe the other two in a later message

or
ADS

or

Apple (MAC) OSX has great software for doing what you want and already
built in to 10.2 and with Roxio Toast you can make VCD's.
