Sorry about the cross-post guys, but I need brains with regard to the
ultratone inkset as well as the 2200.

So last night I got my UT inkset for my 2200. Very exciting. After
running about 7 cleaning cycles, and using about a quarter of my new
ink, I'm still getting clogged nozzles. Now I assume it's due to some
reaction between the UT inks and the UltraChromes on the parking pad. I
looked up the Windex cure, but I'm not familiar enough with the 2200 to
apply those instructions (for a 3000 no less!) to it.

Is there anything tricky about the UT inkset? Should contaminated ink
clog this much? I'm almost positive this is the cause of the problem,
because after I ran the head alignment routine, I was getting ALMOST
perfect nozzle checks. I let it sit for 10-20 minutes, and it was
almost entirely clogged on the next nozzle check. So I went to bed.

Is the parking pad what I need to clean? I assume the pad is on the
right side of the printer under the head. I found a page on the net
that said the pad has a cup around it to keep it airtight. Is there
anyway to check to make sure it still has a good seal?

I also was unable to find anything in my Epson manual that explained how
to remove the print head for manual cleaning. Is this not possible or
just not recommended by Epson? I've heard tell of folks on the net
soaking their HEADS in windex overnight too, but I'm not sure that's
necessary since the clogs can be removed by the printers normal cleaning
routine, the nozzles just clog back up.

I guess I should get in touch with an Epson tech?

Justin,

I think I've been running the Ultratones since april or may this year,
and have never had a serious clog in all that time, so I'm surprised to
hear about the poor performance of your cartridges.

I've switched between ultrachromes and ultratones countless times in my
2100, so I don't think there should be any compatability problems
either. I've even filled an Epson matte black cartridge with Eboni
without bothering to clean out the old ink first, and it worked fine...
Just took a long time for the tone to cool down.

My printer is kind of broken now though. I thought it was dead for a
long time because every time I switched it on and tried to print it
would make this loud, screeching noise and start to blink all its lights
and I would have to switch it off. I finally figured out how I could
lower the little lever next to the print head manually before each print
and avoid the problem, but I'll have to send it in soon, before my
warranty runs out. The service is really poor though, they demand that I
send the printer to them through the post office and I don't even have a
box that big to send it in, so I've been putting it off for a while now.

Anyway, it could be that the problem with my printer is somehow related
to the inkset and/or extensive refilling and frequent switching of
cartridges that I've done, or maybe the chips wear out with time, I
don't know...

I fixed the same problems on my 1200s by cleaning and lightly
lubricating the print-head guide (the track the print head glides on).
You might give it a try.

I have had an almost identical experience in trying to install the UT
inkset on my 1160. It was printing perfectly for several months using
MIS VM before installing the UT inks. It is now totally clogged despite
all my efforts to unclog it with Windex, original inks, Windex soaks,
etc. This was my 5th installation of a Niagara system. I had no problems
with the previous four so I think I know enough about CIS. I think the
ink may be the problem or there was an awful lot of trash in the new
CIS.
