Does it do anything different/better that Nikon's Capture 3.5, Nikon View 5 or Qimage?

Peter Palmieri

Has anyone tried this new Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw plug in yet? If
it's the one I saw demonstrated a couple of weeks ago at the DIP
Digital Conference in Atlanta, it's well worth the $99.00 cost.

You can down load it off Adobe's web site.

As someone who has NEF files, CRW files, 1D TIF files and now 1DS TIF files,
this plug-in is the cat's pajamas. Works very fast on my P4 2.4ghz. I still
love the way the Capture One software converts the 1DS files, but Adobe is
doing a great job here.

Did anyone catch the fact it MAY be in a future release of Photoshop?
It's in the small print of the detail explanation of what the plug-in
does. It may be better to spend the $99 cost on the next Photoshop upgrade.

Re: [Digital BW] Camera Raw

I did notice this fine print, as well as the comment that Adobe can't
guarantee how long this standalone upgrade will be available. But I just
started with Photoshop 7 and so have not been through an upgrade
cycle. Anyone remember what the historical cost of upgrades has been for
Photoshop? If the upgrade cost is usually substantial I might be tempted
to just get this plug in now and forget about upgrading to the next release
when it comes along (since PS7 seems to be working fine for me at my level
of skill.)

Cheers,
Kip

Well, as they also stated, it's released due to demand. Giving you
the option of now or later. Upgrades are usually in the 149-200
range if I remember correctly.

However...the dynamic histogram while making image corrections is
pretty niffty. It has a feel of working with all the adjustments we
usually do - with the 'original' information.

More, much later however. (I wanted it & don't yet care about an
upgrade).

Re: PS8 upgrade - Does anyone have an idea on a target date for its release?
I haven't even heard any guesstimates. Just curious. I can't even remember
how long PS7 has been out :)

Re: [Digital BW] Camera Raw

Photoshop upgrades are usually available for about $125-$139 street
price. They cost a little more from Adobe
directly than, say, Micro Warehouse, or Mac Warehouse, Mac Connection, etc.

Re: Camera Raw

2003-02-19 by Stephen Kobrin <skobrin@hotmail.com>

Does anyone have actual experience with this plug-in. I often shoot
in raw format with my Canon G-2 and while the Canon software works
well, it takes a very long time to convert and process these files.
If Camera Raw is appreciably faster, I would spring for it. I have
no problem with what is output from the Canon software -- just the
time the gnomes take processing the image. (Sorry if this is off
topic for the list.)

What I saw, demonstrated at the PEI Digital Conference, it will do every
thing better. They developed a Raw file to a tiff in about 6 seconds.

To all who may be interested in Adobe's new RAW plug-in for Photoshop 7:

There are currently two reviews on the 'net that I read today:
www.outbackphoto.com and www.luminous-landscape.com. From what I've
read, the plug-in sounds pretty versatile for the $99 buy in. It was written
by Thomas Knoll; the original developer for PS. So...it certainly
has credentials behind it! Adobe has mentioned that it will be included in
the next version of Photoshop, but since I anticipate my next PS
upgrade to be a year or more away I'm inclined to not wait. Also, this
plug-in will allow me to do conversions on my Mac. I currently convert
my D30 RAW files on a PC with YarcPlus. I really like the YarcPlus software,
but the integration with PS and the real-time feedback
available through this plug-in will probably just be too much to resist.

What the heck...it's only money. Hmmm...if I could just convince the wife of
that fact so I could get a 1Ds!! ;>)

Best regards,
Alan Huntley

Don't get rid of your old software too quickly. I found one D30 file in my
collection that wouldn't process with the PS plugin but *would* process
through BreezeBrowser (it appeared as an abstract of colors rather than a
photo in the PS plugin). So...it's possible that all the bugs are not out,
though it's still a very fine and useful digital photo tool.

Try C1LE (Capture One Limited Edition) from http://www.pictureflow.com/CaptureOne/Pages/C1-LE-Purchase.html, its great!

They even have a Pro version called C1DSLR pro. Do their Try b4 u buy offer, it will let you experiment with the software b4 u commit to it.
