I am drooling over the plan of upgrading to a 2.8 GHz or so, HP workstation, 1.5 GB mem, 36 GB SCSI drive. I may go dual monitor. I can purchase it with either Win2K ( current opsys ) or XPPro. Anyone have any recommendations on the advantages of one over the other ? The main software is PhotoShop 6.0. Thanks, Alex

Alex, I'd stay with Windows 2000 and avoid XP PRO like the plague. Best Regards, David R. Spielman

Alex, Not much difference that you would notice in the OS. The look of XPP is different out of the box but you can change to look like W2K. Software shouldn't be a problem. Check all of your existing hardware (scanner, tape back-up drive, printers etc.) for correct drivers for both OS's. If all drivers are available, I'd go for the XPP. I'm running PS 7.0 on an AMD 2800+ and 1gig of 128bit memory with XP Pro. Runs great. I also run it on a much smaller machine with XP home, and have run it on WIN ME. Be aware that, at least the ImagePrint 5.5 for Epson 2200/7600/9600 requires WIN XP to get full functionality. I don't kow if other software is out there that has similar requirements. You might consider that before jumping. Most WIN new development seems to be targeted for XP Pro. 2000 seems to be fading as a prefered platform for new development. Oh, yes. I'm running two monitors on that XP PRO system. One other item, XP PRO has dual processor capability. You may or may not care about that. At some point, however, I intend to upgrade to dual processors. That's the main reason I chose XP PRO over XP HOME for the PS machine. TB, In order for any application that runs under windows (like Photoshop) to take advantage of a second processor in that system, the application in question must have been designed in the first place to support multiprocessors (ie, a multi-thread application). As far as I know, Photoshop (at least on the PC platform) is not a multi-thread application, and can therefore not take advantage of a second processor, even of one is present in the system. Also, with earlier versions of Windows 2000 that I have worked with, if one starts out with a single processor system, and at some later date, a second processor is added, one must RE-INSTALL the OS in order for the operating system to recognize the presents of the second processor. I don't know about you, but re-installing Windows 2000 is not my idea of a fun day at the beach. Having said this, I'm not sure if the current versions of WIndows 2000 have this feature. Might check the Microsoft knowledge base to make sure. Best Regards, David R. Spielman

1. Photoshop is multithreaded and runs fine on two processors.
2. Upgrading to a multi CPU environment requires the reinstallation of
the HAL in Windows, takes about 30 minutes.

Gus, What parts of Photoshop are multi-threaded? You mentioned filters, are you talking about filters that are part of the baseline installation of Photoshop, or third party plug-in filters? Best Regards, David R. Spielman

You are correct. I don't know if that changed in XP though.

this is 100% untrue. there is only one version of photoshop. And you can compile for any number of processors on any machine that runs a compiler, testing is a different problem. brentley

That's true. According to Adobe Photoshop 7.0 does not support dual processors. But, they didn't say about 8.0. Installing WIN XP PRO is a totally different world than 2000. I've installed both. Also, I suspect, because I changed processors recently, and had to reinstall, that one would have to reinstall for dual processors. In this case, that's much better than investing in on OS, and then having to buy another because I didn't think of it in the beginning. TB "David R. At some point, however, I intend to upgrade to dual processors. That's the

There are indications in the software that PS 7 is multi-threaded. But, Adobe told me no.

TB,
In order for any application that runs under windows (like Photoshop) to
take advantage of a second processor in that system, the application in
question must have been designed in the first place to support
multiprocessors (ie, a multi-thread application). As far as I know,
Photoshop (at least on the PC platform) is not a multi-thread
application,
and can therefore not take advantage of a second processor, even of one

present in the system.
Also, with earlier versions of Windows 2000 that I have worked with, if

I have both Win 2000 Pro & XP Pro. The XP Pro is running dual Xeon processors with Raid configuration,10,000 rpm SCSI drives(3) with EIDE drives mirrored for the OS, dual monitors and 2 GB Rhambus RAM. The Epson Stylus Pro's (7600 & 7500) run well. The system was a little unstable at first until the graphics card update from NVIDIA was done. Since then the OS has been rock solid, fast and easy to use. It does have some seemingly added features that are for those users who aren't as familiar with the Win set-up but all in all it has been equivalent to Win 2000 in stability. I also network 2 Win 2000 computers and the XP Pro wirelessly without a problem. Long term XP Pro might have the edge in future development advances as stated by others. W2kPRO is faster, although xppro is supposed to be a bit more secure. I would NOT go for normal edition of w2k. Some of the drivers will not work with xpro so if you have already w2k I would just upgrade to PRO and stay with it. Of course IMHO. I have just ordered new laptop 2.0 GHz, 1GB RAM, 30GB HD FireWire etc. and W2KPro. Good luck. Yes, I can also confirm the dual processer 'awareness' of some of PhotoShop's functions. I have done so with PS 5.0 on NT4 and Win 2K. No change to the Photoshop installation is needed. NT4 did require a full reinstallation with the multiprocessor selection set. However, Win2K, quite happily switched modes from single to dual without any intervention. This planned workstation has second processor ability for exactly this intent.
