Re: [Digital BW] 1160 Epson Banding on VM Sepia

Re: [Digital BW] 1160 Epson Banding on VM Sepia

2003-10-14 by Edward Wiseman

UPDATE..
I now am getting a NO BLACK nozzle check with the NEW CIS cartridge, and have re-installed the OEM Epson Dye cartridge set, and am getting PERFECT NOZZLE CHECKS, and DECENT color purge test at 360 DPI with virtually no banding at all..My problem definitely seems to be somewhere between my MIS INKS and my NO-MORE-CARTS CIS system..even though I have FRESH INK, and NEW carts successfully VACUUM FILLED!

Boy could I use some advice here!

TIA (again)

Subject: [Digital BW] 1160 Epson Banding on VM Sepia

  Hello All..
My Epson 1160 has begun horizontal banding in the direction of print-
head travel..I have a NO-MORE-CARTS setup, and have been using MIS VM
Inks until about a year ago, and have been using VM Sepia since then..
(using Paul Roark's GREAT curves in both situations)..I've ALWAYS had
relatively MINOR clogging..usually on the black cartridge, which Ive
been able to "undo through multiple cleaning cycles/Windex-in-the-
Trough, and then have no trouble for a week or two..I loaded NEW
carts when I switched to SEPIA, and a new BLACK cart only when MIS
went to EBONY on the black about 3 months ago..
Well, I recently had the proverbial "CLOG-from-HELL" about 2 weeks
ago, and contacted both NO-MORE-CARTS direct(where I originally
purchased my CIS system}, and Bob from MIS and followed their advice
to no avail..Oh yes..I was able to get "perfect" nozzle checks..BUT,
I had VERY visible banding( even after VERY CAREFUL head re-
allignment")..Bob advised that I had "foam" in the carts and sent me
a bottom fill adaptor, and NMC asked when I last changed my carts and
how old my ink was (all somewhat recently acqired by me)..
I removed the CIS system, and replaced the carts with ORIGINALS
from Epson, and after MULTIPLE cleanings, I was able to get a good
nozzle check and virtually NO banding at 360 dpi..So I assume my
printer with only about 150-200 prints is "OK"..I then decided that
my existing carts must be defective, so I purchased, installed and
filled a new set of CIS replacement carts from INKJET ART ( NO-MORE-
CARTS no longer sells direct)..And guess what..after MORE
Windex/cleaning cycles and head alignments..I STILL have banding, but
not quite as bad as with the OLD carts, but still VERY visible to the
naked eye..I'm at the point where I'm close to trashing this unit..I
  need some "creative help"..PLEASE!

  TIA

  Eddie Wiseman

Eddie,
I can certainly appreciate your frustration. Been there. I think the
reason noone has come up with a suggestion/solution is that you
appear to have covered all the bases. Just one small detail - is
there any chance your paper thickness toggle lever has moved ? This
can cause slight banding.
Also, I dont know the no more carts setup as I have a cfs from mis -
but I've had the black ink tube gummed up which prevented ink flow -
had to replace the tube.
Frank

Re: [Digital BW] 1160 Epson Banding on VM Sepia

2003-10-15 by Edward Wiseman

THX for your reply Frank, but I always keep my paper thickness switch on the "thick" position, but I also tried it on the "thin" setting as well..I use mostly Epson Enhanced Matte..NO difference on banding or nozzle checks..
As far as the TUBES go, each of the 4 tubes Was flushed with warm water and "blown-dry" before re-assembly, and there was NO evidence of tubes clogging with ink..
