I'm thinking about jumping to a digital output. Currently looking at
1280 and a 3200 scanner. Are there any members in the Portland, OR
area I can contact and look at some physical prints from the 1280 or
2200? I am having a hard time imagining the final result.

Check out Pro Photo on N.W. 19th in Portland,
One stop shopping all things digital and helpful
folks behind the counter as well...

Have all samples to check out 1280 & 2200, printed on all
paper stocks in order to compare...

I'm in the smae boat you are just making decissions and trying to get

I didn't realise this I have been in Prophoto many times and have
only seen one or two printers set up and maybe a couple of monitors.
I know with their remodel they did expand this area but I have been
in there since and didn't get the notition that they had a whole lot
except very high end stuff.

But next time I go back I will try to look more like I have a butt
load of money so they pay any attention to me at all. Last time I
tried to get some time with a 10D and finally the girl who knew not a
single answer to my questions but was able to tell me all about how
the lens did the metering in the camera so it could'nt possibly be
used with any sort of a mount adapter like the one Canon Pro shops
sold for the 200mm+ FD mount lenses to be used on EF mount cameras. I
just told her thanks and bought my 1/2 frame slide mounts and film
and left.

Sean,
I am located in Portland and I used to work for ProPhoto in the digital department selling and supporting digital capturing and printing eqipment. I can help you out with questions on b/w printing. Wait with the 3200 scanner since a newer model is coming out with higher dpi and same price, 4800, and it scans a full 8x10.Iwould go for the 2200 and get custom profiles made. But the 2200, even with PhotoBlack inks, does not print as well as the 1280 on the glossy media. 2200 is for matte and fine art paper with Matte Black, that is where it is the best. The 1280 is a perfect marrige with Carbon inks though.

Thank you,
Anders

Sean and Anders,
I have a 2200 and I spent a long time producing custom profiles for
it thinking that I might improve on the supplied paper profiles.
After many hours my conclusion was that mine were very little
different from Epsons, assuming that you are using their papers. I
personally have not found a paper any better for color work than
Epson. B/W is of course a entirely diffent matter. Some kind of RIP
is the way to go with the 2200, QTR is wonderful is you have a Mac
or Linux system. If not and you are PC bound it's going to cost you
about $500 for a PC rip. The good news is that some of the Rips can
be used for multiple printers.

Regards,

Sierra Gold
