First time use of MIS inks

First time use of MIS inks

2003-12-06 by Jake Hellbach

Hi,
For the past month, I've been going over getting a RIP for about $500.00 or
a second printer with MIS b/w inks.
I downloaded the evaluation version of Imageprint and did some test prints
on the 2200, they looked much better then the Epson driver but didn't look
as good as I was hoping. Plus the amount of ink used in those little carts
for printing b/w photos with large amounts of black or dark areas was
amazing.

I settled on getting a used 1270 from Ebay for $125.00 and the CFS VM ink
system from MIS.
Last night everything came in, I setup the MIS system ( the instructions
for the MIS install is a little confusing but re-reading made it make
sense.) on the printer and had to do a few nozzle cleanings before that
looked right.

Then using Paul Roark's Curves that were marked NCA (no color adjustment)
and following his workflow to the letter my first print look great ! (and
the second , third, etc.)
I was blown away by the blacks. Now I'm kicking myself for wasting so much
time and money on ink and paper trying to get my 2200 to print decent b/w
prints.

If you are doing what I did, contemplating a RIP or separate b/w printer, do
the printer. Its cheaper and you end up with higher quality prints.

Paul, Thanks for your hard work making this simple for the rest of us.

Jake

Congrats on your b&w printing.
Since you still have a 2200 printer you could try Black Only printing
with this printer. All you you would need is one UT-Eboni black
cartridge for the E2200. And its compatible with the Epson UC color
inks.

Read more on BO printing at:

Caution - the Eboni cartridge on the page you referenced is chipped to
fit only in the light black ink position of the 2200 and will not work
for BO printing. They do sell Eboni in a K postion cart, but I don't
know the link for that item at the moment.

Is this Eboni K cart for use with matte papers, glossy papers, or both?

Disregard my email -- answer is matte papers only (on MIS website)

Andre

Are you saying that for b/o printing in the 2200 that one ONLY needs
a black cartridge and not the other six?

I expect the printer will refuse to operate if any of the other six are
missing, but in Black Ink Only mode they won't actually be used, so you can
leave the stock Epson inks in there.

True.

>but in Black Ink Only mode they won't actually be used,

Actually they are used slowly over time during cleaning cycles, so
eventually they must be replaced. But they aren't used in the BO
print so they can be anything. But Eboni does seem to work ok with
the UC inks, so if you want to do color as well just keep the UC
carts. They are $7.90 each at Atlex.

Clayton
