getting UT cooler, like I used to get with FSN & G4 K

2003-12-07 by Bob Michaels

I just switched over from FSN w/G4 K to UT & Eboni inks in my 1280 and
find the UT is warmer on EEM than I'm used to. I tried the cool curve
and it seems warmer then the neutral curve. Checked the ink positions
three times and think I got them right. I'm using the curves
downloaded from MIS (files dated 8/11/03) so I assume they are the
latest.

Paul, anyone, got any suggestions?

Bob,

It has been my experience that the FS-N black is cooler than the UT
black (aka Eboni) right out of the printer. Unfortunately the FS-N
black warms considerably (and fades too). I have FS-N prints even
under glass that warmed a lot in the last year or so (fortunately I
like the warmth that has occurred for portrait shots). So, while the
FS will give you a more neutral output it will not stay that way,
while the Eboni will be warmer (I do not find it overly warm when
viewed alone) it's pretty much, straight out of the printer, as it
will stay.

The UT 1280 neutral curve ("UT80-N.acv") is supposed to produce a print that
is neutral according to my X-Rite. The FS-N inks are actually cool. The
"UT80-C+3" is supposed to produce a print that is 0.03 units cool. It
should be a fairly close match to the FS-N.

Richard, thanks. I've been using the old Generations 4 black at the
suggestion of the late, great Jerry Olson. I found that to work for me
as I don't hang things for very long. Maybe that spoiled me and I'll
just have to get used to a warmer tone black.

You may remember Linc has the same comment hre about warmness of Eboni
when printing BO. He was coming from the dye Epson black in his 1280.
