Downsides of Image Print ?

Downsides of Image Print ?

2003-12-09 by houston.spencer@alcatel.com.cn

Thanks to those who have been responding to my question about options for
a 2200 without a RIP.

As I consider the wisdom I'm receiving, a further question to my betters:

What are the down-sides of IP, other than cost?

I have heard "fiddly to install" and also "poor customer service". I'd
really appreciate hearing from people who've actually had these
experiences, or other difficulties, about the details.

Thanks. --h

Houston:

Installation is easy: see my Notes on IP Setup on <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/
ImagePrint/files/>. But documentation is sparse.

I was worried about customer support because I'm in Bangkok. I've had excellent support
by e-mail. They even phoned me on New Year's eve last year to resolve a problem I was
having.

Installation isn't particularly bad, as long as you follow the directions. And the directions aren't difficult. You also need to read the manual. It has quite a few features, that means more chance to screw up. But, it's not bad.

Colorbyte is basically arrogant about support. You will get an answer from them. However, if you buy from a retailer, Colorbyte expects them to provide support. I would imagine that there are retailers capable of that. Colorbyte views their support desk as a last resort when the retailer can't help. If you buy directly from them, they provide the support. The best way is email. You will generally get a recording saying they will call you back. Email has been pretty good. I coughed up the annual maintenance fee, so that get's me a little better access. But, that's expensive, unless you figure you would buy each new version that comes out. Then it's a reasonable deal.

Colorbyte is extremely good at what they do. Go look at their corporate web site to see the list of manufacturers they supply with RIP's/Drivers/etc. But, the bottom line is that they are pretty arrogant.

It's a great product that lives up to the claims they make.

I tried the demo and once I got past a few installation "quirks" it
worked fine. Gave some very nice prints. A little more dotty than I
expected though not obtrusively so. An issue I have is the use of all
the color inks when producing B&W. I have a worry that using the
color inks for B&W may not be as archival.

When producing b&w prints from Imageprint using a gray profile, all of the color inks are not used. If you print using a color profile, it likely uses all of the color inks.

For B&W prints, even using the gray profile at neutral, I believe cyan
and magenta is used (LC, C, LM, M? I do not know). At least those are
the dots that I can see with a magnifying glass.

Yes. Only two colors, not all of the colors are used in b&w. The ones that are used are in relatively small quantities. Even so, the use of colored inks at all, in any inkset, has to affect longivity, when compared to pure carbon.
