Hi Roy,

Sorry for a dumb question but can beta 9 be loaded directly over beta 8
in a Mac using Panther?

That's a good point. Yes, just load beta9 over beta8 -- all the relevant
files are reinstalled.

Yes, I just did it. The installer is "smart" the aqua button says "Upgrade"

I see that the 2200 installer script (greatly simplified!) installs profiles for "Oriental
Fiber." Where is the best source for this paper?

Just one thing that is a little confusing for the 2100/2200 users: within
the Profiles| QUAD2200 folder are profiles for EEM, OFB and PFA. The readme
refers to HPR, BES, EEM and OFB. What is PFA? Within the CurveDesign
folder there is a sub-folder ExampleInks which contains 2200_Profiles for
EEM, OFB, PFA. Presumably these are the same profiles as those in Profiles
| QUAD2200. Have the curves for HPR, BES not changed/don¹t need to change?
(Carl also did some profiles for SPE [Somerset Photo Enhanced], a paper
widely on sale in the UK as Somerset Enhanced Velvet. Will these profiles
also need to be updated?) Actually, I see HPR and SPE are in CurveDropBox |
QUAD2200 despite not being in the two profiles folders - looks like BES
didn¹t make the cut. (If they are already in the drop box it may be less
confusing to include the two profiles folders presumably the drop box ones
are used in the installation as HPR and SPE are available for use.) Of
course it all works and perhaps this is just tidy up but nonetheless it may
relieve some future confusion.

Lastly I assume that all the 2200 profiles are for use with Ultrachrome
inks, rather than another ink set. Can Roy or Carl confirm this.

Thanks I love this RIP!

Steve

Steve,

Sorry for the confusion. There is an updated read-me with new paper
descriptions in the QTRbeta 9 archive on my filesharing site (link
below). I haven't re-done the profiles for SPE, BES, and HPR because
I'm not currently using these papers. You should be able to easily
modify the old profiles - just re-check the partitioning and then
re-linearize. All of the new profiles are for use with the Ultrachrome
inks. The HPR and SPE profiles you see in your CurveDropBox folder are
ones that you installed previously - they were not included in beta9.

Re: [Digital BW] QuadToneRIP -- new version for Jaguar and Panther

2003-12-13 by Steve Kale

Carl

Thanks, I will take a look at the ReadMe. I am puzzled by your last
sentence because they exist in the original CurveDropBox folder downloaded
from Roy's site and the new CurveDesign folder replaced the old one. I am
afraid it may take me some time to come up to speed with the notion of
checking partitioning and re-linearizing although I have to get into this
soon! (I guess the old profiles are now not much good with the new QTR
version? I am currently mostly using HPR.)

One last question: with all the discussion about Eboni black I am wondering
if there would be considerable benefit to using it instead of the Epson
Ultrachrome Matt Black cartridges - ie making a simple, small step to better
B&W by upgrading one ink and still using the other Epson Ultrachromes and
QTR. Given Ebony is priced at a healthy premium to Epson UC Matt Black (vs
Atlex.com pricing) the difference had better be more than fussing at the
margin. Any thoughts? (My assumption would be to use Ebony for matt colour
work also - ie simply purchase Ebony from now on vs UC matt black.)

Cheers

Sorry, the ReadMe discusses warm, cool and sepia. What are the CoolSe
profiles? I apologise if these are really dumb questions but I prefer not
to guess...

(I also assume the EEM, OFB and PFA profiles on your download page are the
same as those that come with the install package from Roy¹s site.)

Steve,

If you installed QTR beta9 over the existing beta8 and had profiles
already installed in beta8 the old profiles will still be in your
CurveDropBox folder. If the new profiles that you installed with beta9
have the same names as the old ones the old ones would be overwritten
with the new profiles. Since HPR was not included in beta9, what you
see in your CurveDropBox folder is the old HPR profile. I have a new
batch of HPR coming next week and will try to get a new profile
uploaded.

I don't think you would see much difference between MK and Eboni,
unless you are doing BO printing.

Re: [Digital BW] QuadToneRIP -- new version for Jaguar and Panther

2003-12-13 by Carl Schofield

The CoolSe profiles have a slightly higher ratio of LM/LC to give a
selenium toned appearance.
Yes, profiles are the same.

Carl

The HPR and SPE profiles are in the beta9 CurveDropBox that is downloaded
from Roy's site - ie in the dmg file prior to installing anything. If these
profiles are no longer appropriate they may throw people off.

I just printed the same image I have been working on for the last couple of
days using BO and the Epson UC matt black and I was not that impressed - I
much prefer the smoothness of the QTR print. (The image is of the Tetons
after the first snow in late Sep/early Oct last year with the last remains
of cloud clearing the mountain. The differences between BO and QTR are very
apparent in the clouds.) A matter of taste I am sure but I will stick with
QTR.

Thanks

When you mount the disk image you are seeing the profiles from your
previous installation in the CurveDropBox - they are not in the
download.

Hi Steve,

The CurveDropBox is just a link or alias into your disk. So in the distribution
all there is is a link. But if you look at it, the Finder follows the link and
shows you what is already on your disk drive.
