JANUARY 04 print exchange sign up

2003-12-19 by Tom OConnell

Hi everyone-

Time to sign up for the Jan04 exchange.

* letter size digital BW prints
* no theme this month
* due on West Coast USA by Jan 20
* sign up limited to first 15 plus 3 alternates

details below...Happy Holidays,

Tom O'Connell

----------------------------------------
	January Print Exchange Info sheet

* Sign up will be limited to the first 15 PLUS 3 alternates.

* Sign up by EMAILING me (use the link in the "from" field above)

*Prints are digital BW on either letter (8x5 x 11) or A4 (European
letter equivalent).

* Will also accept prints from 3 or more alternates (if not needed,
they will automatically be the first included in the next 3 spots
available (one of the next two months).

* Prints must arrive on West Coast U.S. by January 20.

* Prints can be shipped to me any way you like, but must include a
prepaid return shipping box for either UPS or FEDEX ONLY (new postal
regulations require in person post office shipping for anything over
one pound and downtown SF postal duties are just too onerous). To
save money, the return can be via UPS or FedEx ground (but both
services require that ground shipments strictly be in "you own
packaging" not the 2-day air boxes).

* Prints will be BOTH Letter and A4. This is a shipping challenge. It
is imperative that all prints be shipped in a container that will
accommodate BOTH SIZES of paper since the return will include both
sizes. The MEDIUM Fedex box fits the SMALL Fedex Box inside for very
easy return and the SMALL BOX neatly holds both sizes of print. DO
NOT SEAL THE SMALL BOX... Maybe add a little tissue or newspaper for
protection. PLEASE FIX THE RETURN LABEL ON THE SMALL BOX SO I DON'T
MESS UP WHOM THE PRINTS GO TO. This would be the method STRONGLY
PREFERRED for quick easy turnaround. Sending prints in the
manufacturer's paper box WILL NOT WORK... A4 will not fit in letter,
nor will letter fit in A4. Again, please attach your shipping label
correctly to the box...this is occasionally critical as it gets
confusing sorting. (side note: tape is the biggest threat to a
print...most new users tape waaaaay too much).

* Prints should all be enclosed in individual glassine/plastic
holders with a description sheet facing the back (for sorting).
PLEASE NOTE THE EXCHANGE MONTH THE PRINTS ARE ENTERED FOR (I usually
have 3 months being shipped at once). The print protectors are
available from many sources, small quantities are for sale at
inkjetart.com... larger quantities all over the internet. The
description should include at least: Print title, your name, shooting
data, printing data. At a minimum this should include printer,
inkset, software (including print driver/software). Any comments or
stories on workflow would be very interesting and welcome. Don't
forget to sign the print.

* After I receive 15 sign ups and 3 alternates (who will send in
prints), I will post a "closed" on the forum. The alternates are
necessary to fill the exchange if we have a "drop out" or "late
shipper" but I will not enlarge past the 15 level so those who chose
to can print early and mail off the 14 prints. If any of the 15
participants are late, their prints will be replaced by any I might
have from Alternates so we can start shipping prints on the due date
and accommodate all
those people who always get them in on time.

Looking for 2200 B&W sample

2003-12-19 by Ed Mathews

Greetings,
I would really like to see a sample B&W print produced from a 2200,
using Windows OS, using a RIP that produces a neutral looking B&W print.
I know many people on this list use this sort of set-up, and I'm
interested in seeing the results because I'm considering this investment
if I like it.
I certainly would be willing to pay for it, so if anyone can
provide one for me I would appreciate them contacting me privately.

Thanks,
Ed

It's funny that I had just posted a similar request on one of
photo.net's forums! Actually, I am looking for someone in the
Southern maine area who is either using Colorbyte's imageprint on a
2200, much like Ed's request; or someone using Paul Roark's MIS Ultra-
tone system, which I understand is NOT for the 2200 as of this point,
and would require an investment in another printer on my part. I will
come to you to see what you've done, which is why the geographic
limit. Either way I am hoping to try to imitate the selenium-toned
prints I made years ago on Agfa's Portriga. And with little or no
metamerism.
Thanks...
Steve

It's not officially supported, but it's possible to make it work. I've
refilled my own cartridges and developed a set of curves that work
really well with the inks.

Contact me off list if you're interested in some printed samples. I'm in
Norway, so I'd have to send them to you by mail.

Earlier today I sent an e-mail to Colorbyte asking for some sort of
sample, seeing how I don't have the software, or even a 2200 at this
point. I offered to pay for it. John Pannozzo replied quickly, but his
response was useless. He simply told me the best way to see it was to
buy it myself, which of course I'm not about to do until I see someone's
results.

Ed -

Colorbyte explained to me that they don't provide demos or samples because they provide a 30 day return policy. So, if you buy it an don't like it, return it. The good part about that approach is that you are making prints that don't have the demo logo stuff all over the print. The bad part is, you are out the money, if only temporarily.

Also, instead of buying from Colorbyte, you can often get a better price through a retailer. The retailer I bought from had the hardware and software on site, so I was able to see the results as well as touch the software. I bought mine for 20% off. And, I had the return possibility.

Thanks to Tom and Steve, for the replies explaining why I should just
download the colorbyte software and try it out, but you both (as well as
colorbyte) keep missing the important fact that I don't have a 2200 at
this point! What good is it going to do to download the software when I
don't have the printer to run it on? I keep saying this but people keep
missing it. That's why I want to see what it can do before I ditch my
1280 and buy a new printer and then spend another 500.00 in software.

Thanks,

Valid point. But, I've been know to buy a new printer with less excuse than wanting to test some software. Caution: That can often result in others in the household being less than thrilled.

Re: [Digital BW] Re: Looking for 2200 B&W sample

I would have thought the better approach would be to dedicate the 1280 to
B&W with a quad workflow and use the 2200 for colour the resale value of
the 1280 must be limited and certainly less than the cost of IP. Others in
this list can advise as to the suitability of the 1280 for these purposes.
I use the 2100 for both colour and B&W but have a Mac and so can take
advantage of QTR rather than spending what I consider an out-of-proportion
amount on IP. With good profiles you don¹t need IP for colour on the
2100/2200.

When I returned my Colorbyte disc (wouldn't work on WIN98 even though
at that time they said it would) they credited my credit card for the
software but didn't refund shipping costs both ways which cost me
about $40. Lesson learned.

All the better to do business with a good local retailer, if you have the choice.

My 1280 is already dedicated to B&W using MIS VM. Results tend to vary
too much for my liking. The set of cartridges I'm using now are giving
me terrible results, and this is not the first time that's happened.

I would still argue that perfecting the use of the 1280 on a dedicated basis
is the way to go, perhaps moving to the UT inks. Others are better placed
to help you on this though. As I said, I use the 2100 with the Epson UC
inks and QTR. I have demo¹d IP and did not think it gave me anything more
than QTR for B&W and it is relatively expensive. (It gave me nothing, in
my opinion, for colour work.) Were it not for the new 4000 coming out, my
next step would otherwise be to get a 1280 (or another 2100 although I
suspect that would be a bit of waste as the 1280 is just fine for a
dedicated printer), dedicate it to B&W, and run the MIS UT inks with either
QTR or a Roark workflow. The 2100/2200 is a fine printer and IP does
produce wonderful B&W and colour prints. Many claim the combination is as
good as a dedicated B&W system although this is a topical subject (many
people seem to be rather passionate about IP and are prepared to pay the
price and put up with its clumsy interface). However if cost is a factor, I
have to believe that pursuing your use of the 1280 on a dedicated basis is
the best way to go (post on this basis and I am sure you will receive a lot
of help). If you are itching to spend, get the 2200 for colour work or put
a deposit on a 4000.....

Steve,
I really appreciate your taking the time to offer this advice, and
I know you spent a lot of time and energy and thought with this
response. But you might not know that I've been on this forum for over
a year, been posting, and working with the 1280 for that same period.
I'm on my 3'rd 1280. I've corresponded privately with many people, and
exchanged prints with them too. It's not like I haven't given it the
old "college try". I did try the UT inks as well, and they clogged
severely in my 1280, and produced terrible results. I also fairly
frequently get clogs when changing new VM cartridges, that will often
take a couple days and 1/4 of the new ink cartridge to clear out. And I
sometimes get variations in results from one set of cartridges to the
next. Then there's the micro/dither banding problem, which sometimes
happens and sometimes doesn't, even with good nozzle checks. And other
people I've talked to have had a variety of results (some good-some bad)
with the same curves, inks, and model printer. It's amazing to me that
when adhering to a strict workflow, how at times the whole thing seems
wildly unpredictable, and it's extremely frustrating. Most recently, I
was pretty darn satisfied with the VM inks and at least the MW curve,
but on this latest set of cartridges I'm now getting some
solarization/posturization with the same images and the same settings
and the same paper and good nozzle checks. Now I'm suspicious that
maybe MIS inks are not mixed the same all the time, or as consistently
as they should be.
What I want, is a printer I can trust, and inks I can trust on a
consistent basis. If it means using OEM inks, then so be it, but I want
them to be somewhat archival and that's why I've had recent interest in
the 2200. I'm also interested in the HP7960, but I can't find any real
samples from that either, and I'm somewhat suspicious of print longevity
and paper choices with that model.

Thanks,
Ed

Thanks for the responses and further info. I also heard offline from
a fellow recommending a product called Septone for the 2200 - which
I need to read a bit more on. I had been thinking that a dedicated
B&W printer, like a 1280 using one of the specialized inksets, might
be the way to go, but Ed mentions that he is not getting consistent
results. That would drive me nuts! I will try the demo download of
Imageprint, which I was unaware of. Haven't heard from anyone in my
neck of the woods yet for a hands on demo, though. Sounds like we
are not yet at a point of predictable, repeatable, exhibitable, B&W
printing results on inkjets just yet.

Actually, many on this forum produce b&w prints that are not only predictable, repeatable, and exhibitable, but very saleable, as well. These processes for producing b&w inkjet are no longer in their infancy, they are excellent now, and are being improved almost daily. And, some of the processes are geting to be quite reasonably priced/per print. Jump in.

Please don't base your decision to do or not do something on my
experiences. Likewise, don't base it on any other one person's
experience. Read and hear from everyone and make your own decision.
There are plenty of people who are very satisfied with their results
using various methods. There are also those who are less than satisfied
with some methods, and more satisfied with others. And then there are
those of us who have yet to get something completely satisfactory, but
keep working toward it because of the potential and convenience digital
imaging holds. Keep an open mind, read everything, and try the least
expensive means first and see how it goes for you. Then move on to
another method if that doesn't work for you. One thing I can tell you
is that there is plenty of room for variation in results, even with the
same exact hardware and software, so your results are very likely to be
not exactly the same as someone else's. As compared to me, that might
be a really good thing!

Thanks,
Ed

Hi Steve,

I'm getting "predictable, repeatable, exhibitable, B&W printing results"
presently. In the last year, things have become much simpler to jump into
and I'm sure they will continue to improve.

I'd suggest spending some (more) time in the group archive--there is an
immense amount of info there. Including discussion of the Septone system.
