ProfileMaker Pro vs. Eye One Photo

ProfileMaker Pro vs. Eye One Photo

2003-12-17 by dan_honemann@yahoo.com

For today (12/17) ONLY, GretagMacbeth is selling their ProfileMaker
Pro package for half price. Chromix sells it for $1399:

I'm bewildered by the dizzying array of products GretagMacbeth now
offers for profiling. My question is simply this: is the ProfileMaker
package at this price a better deal than their EyeOne Photo package
at roughly the same price:

What are the differences between these two packages?

The eye one package comes with a photospectrometer. the profile maker
pro software does not have a hardware measurement device. If you
already have an eye one photo package the profile maker package will add
CMYK profiling, a profile editor, scanner profiling and the ability (for
extra money) to profile digital cameras. If the CMYK and scanner stuff
are appealing to existing eye-one users then this is a super deal.

It would be interesting to see what tools some of the people who do
curves etc. use in that process. Paul?

The question I have is whether the profiling software that comes with
Eye-One Photo is as good as ProfileMaker Pro (ex CMYK and the ability to
profile other devices). I have heard on the one hand that it is the same
but on the other that it generates a better profile...

The word is that the profile building algorithms are identical. Pro
has more user options to screw up in the process, and will accept any
chart, supplied or custom made. It can also be used with a wide
variety of devices. Photo comes with 2 RGB charts, one small, one
large, and I haven't seen a way to trick it into taking anything else
though it may be possible.
So, assuming you like Gretag results and standard charts will work for
you, Pro offers no benifits for straight and simple RGB printer profiling.

QTR Linearization w/Silverfast A1 & Scanner?

2003-12-17 by Tim Goodwin

Hello

This is probably wishful thinking on my part but here goes.

I have an old Epson Perfection 1200 flatbed scanner which has
Silverfast Ai 6 scanning software installed. Included in the software
is a Densitometer. The max sample size is 3x3 pixels.

I was wondering if this could be used to read a stepwedge in the
Linearization process when calibrating QuadTone RIP curves instead of
an actual hardware Densitometer or the Eye-One.

Thanks
Tim

In addition to the pieces of Profilemaker Pro that have been mentioned
in previous posts, another really (for me) significant difference is
that PM Pro can use ambient light measurement data from the EyeOne and
use this in the profile. You can then have profiles which are targeted
to a specific light source.
BTW, the profiles from EyeOne Match and PM Pro are visually
indistinguishable from one another.
