Calculating density values with Eye-One

Calculating density values with Eye-One

2003-12-22 by Steve Kale

From my other posts you can see that I am trying to improve my knowledge of QTR.
However, I also have a very basic question potentially applicable to a broader
audience. How can I use an Eye-One Photospectrometer to calculate density values. I
can see how to take a spot measurement of a patch and get an answer in a variety of
colour spaces but how are these then converted to density values?

Thanks

Steve

PS: do others have problems with the Eye-One rubbing along the surface of patch
strips when using the strip ruler?

Re: [Digital BW] Calculating density values with Eye-One

Steve,

You can calculate density from either the "L" values from the LAB data
or directly from the "Y" number in the XYZ data:

If L > 8
Y = ((L + 16)/116)^3
Else
Y = (L * 27)/24389

Density = -log10(Y)

I have no problems with the eye-one rubbing on the patches when using
the strip reader. I have attached an 8.5x11 inch sheet of pictorico
high gloss white film to the underside of the back edge of the strip
ruler so the feet on the eye-one slide more smoothly when making strip
measurements.

Carl,

In the first Y = equation, are you using the symbol ^ to
represent "to the power of" 3?

Thanks,
Mike

So density is always a negative number? I thought we talked about density
figures as positive numbers eg a dMax of 1.64. In Roy¹s calibration doc he
has numbers like 127, 121, 131.... (I am taking the middle number from the
Sample spot measurement in the XYZ space using Measure Tool¹s Spot
Measurement function ie a dark black is producing a y value of around 2.0)

Is there a useful book for this kind of stuff?

(Re the Eye-One, I was about to do exactly the same thing.)

Presumably the level of 60 for LK was set using the process described in the
Calibration document....

No, L values go up to 100, for 100% reflectivity or transmissivity. If you
poke in L values that are less than 100, the log will be negative, so
negating it gives you a positive value.

Thanks. I was jumping straight to the density equation from the Y values
from the Measure Tool without realising they need to be divided by 100

Is the Y in XYZ a luminance value? I thought it was a green value, not the
same as the Y in Yxy.

To be honest I was simply following Carl's instructions but I did cross check the
number I had up on the computer and the math worked.

I also thought that this was the case, but according to the math
equations on Bruce Lindbloom's site the Y in XYZ is equal to the Y in
xyY.

Would you folks trim your repls down? As you can see from below, they are
getting reeeeally long. Makes for lots of scrolling while reading the
