I have some strange "noise" for lack of a better word in this
  step-wedge:

  http://hiddenworld.net:81/wild-wedge.jpg

Can anyone tell me what might be causing this?

This was printed with Quad-Tone Rip, using Linux, and printed
  landscape mode.

The printing resolution was at 1440, I believe.
I notice this noise on all step wedges, and different
portions of any print I make. I previous poster suggested
the print wheels, which would seem logical, but other
prints, with similar noise, would lead me to believe this
is not the case.

I wish I could figure it out. I would really like to use
the Quadtonerip software- I have not seen this problem in
the Roark workflow, using windows instead of Linux. Quadtonerip
is kind of complex, and I am just starting out, so maybe I
am missing something.

I get a perfect nozzle check, and the heads are perfectly aligned...

It looks to me like the paper was rippled, and perhaps needs a different
paper thickness setting on the printer. But I would think that would affect
all prints, not just those made with QTR.

Don`t know what`s causing it, but it looks very much like the enlarged
dithering pattern. Have you noticed that it recurs in a pattern, i.e.
always in the second half of the third step . Don`t know whether this
is helpful.
