How to combat flaking?

How to combat flaking?

2004-01-06 by Don

Lately I have encountered some flaking on some of my prints done on
Epson Watercolor paper. what do you gurus do to combat flaking
problems on your fine art type papers? Kind of a bummer making a nice
print and then having a few tiny pieces of it fall off!!!!

Thanks for any tips.

The coating on the Epson Radiant White Watercolor paper is indeed
tender. It scuffs and flakes easily.

If you mat and frame it immediately, you should have no problem.
Otherwise store them in a century box with a very thin acid free
separator sheet until you can get them matted and framed.

Do not stack the prints without a separator sheet. They will very
likely get damaged.

Cheers,

Mitch

Glenn,

Any idea where I can find such separator sheets?

Thanks,
Dan

Where they sell archival products.

You can also try the vinyl inserts as a temporary storage solution.

I've had good luck with Macdonald Protect-A-Cote from SureGuard as a
spray protectant. It is matte. Make sure you use it outside *WITH* a
mask. It is very noxious stuff.

Mitch

How to combat flaking? Brush before use and/or ban from this forum.

Oh, well. It's a slow news day, and I'm running the risk that you'll never hear from me again on this forum.

Would the 'tender surface' be the same as flaking? I was under the impression that flaking was lose coating particles remaining on the paper after the manufacturing process. That's why they could be 'brushed' off. I've found that more than one paper needs relatively good handling procedures to minimize damage. On the other hand, we print business cards on several materials, most of which seem to hold up under the handling. Maybe the size of the print (larger is worse) makes it more prone to damage. Just observations, I don't know the answer.
