Infra Red Images using Canon 10D

Infra Red Images using Canon 10D

2004-01-07 by Andrew Ammendola (Alexius DeZign)

G'day All

I know that there are some limitations to easily take infra red images
with the 10D due to a filter located in front of the sensor. However, I
have seen some examples on the web that claim to be near like infra red.
Having never taken infra red images on film I can't tell if the claims
are credible. Unfortunately, as in most cases there is no detailed
workflow.

So my 1st Q is

1. Has anyone tried to take infra red images using the 10D? Maybe, using
a filter on the lens. If yes, what post processing did you do to get the
final result? What lens filter did you use?

The next Q might apply to non 10D users.

Has anyone converted an image either colour or B&W (preferably from
colour) to infra red using the PC? What was your work flow?

Thanks. Take care

recently I have found this digital infrared plugin from fm-software

http://www.fredmiranda.com/shopping/DI

I think it's a poor emulation if you compare it to real BW-IR film,
but check the samples.

I made a few tests with the 10D and D30 using IR pass filters and there
are some sample images here:
http://www.pbase.com/scho/infrared&page=all
The 10D samples are "false color" - red and blue channels swapped.

This really belongs in a Canon 10D group. There are several on
Yahoo! Groups.

The brief answer is that the hot metal filter blocks so much IR, it
is absolutely impactical to use the Canon 10D for IR photography.
Shots typically require tens of seconds.

You cannot convert them after the fact.

There are PS actions that claim to give images an IR look by using
old photographic techniques such as solarization and posterization.
Those are not true IR images nor are they converted IR images and
should not be described as such. At best, they are faux IR images.

Cheers,

Mitch

Those are gorgeous pictures. I guess it's worth shooting IR, even with the
built-in IR stop filter, as long as the subject's sitting still. What was
your workflow for the 10D "false color" images?

The workflow in the Photoshop channel mixer was simply to set the red
channel to 100% blue and the blue channel to 100% red. Then use levels
adjustments (by channel) to fine tune the color.

Infra Red Images using Canon 10D

2004-01-08 by Matthew Born

Carl, those are lovely indeed. I'm stunned to see such nice IR work from a
digital. Every time I think I've talked myself out of a DSLR (Sigma -- too
much low light noise, D100 -- no mirror lock up, Kodak DCS -- didn't win the
lottery this week, and on and on...) I see something like this and get
interested again.
