longevity of Epson 1160

longevity of Epson 1160

2001-10-11 by albatros.bee@web.de

Hi,
I have now an 1160 since 2 months and it seems indeed a good printer
for b&w prints with archival ink. Being given that the 1160 is out of
production since a moment already I wonder whether it wouldn´t be a
good idea to buy a "backup" for day X when my first will stop
working. Here in Germany it can still be found at a rather low price.

Or would the 1290 be a better alternative, specially when using MIS
inks. BTW, I still haven´t found out if the german model "1290" isn´t
sold as "1280" in the US. At least I never saw a 1270/ 80 here.

Greetings Bernhard

Bernhard,

Given that digital printing is an area subject to great change and,
hopefully, rapid technical advancement, I would not be inclinded to
stock pile 1160 printers.

I have a 1280 which is mechanically the same as the 1290 but there
are critical differences in the electronics so that there is a
difference in the drivers. Bernd Langmack ran into problems in
attempting to use Paul Roark's curves with the MIS VM inkset on a
1290.

I have not heard any reports on Piezo and the 1290 at this point.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
