The best 4x5 field camera

The best 4x5 field camera

2004-02-08 by Arne Olsson

Hi all Photographers in the World!

Here in Sweden it's soon springtime and every year I feel the same.
I just have to buy a wooden flatbed 4x5" field camera, just for fun, to use
in the new light.
Otherwise I use Nikon D100 today for snapshots and my Swedish Hasselblad for
BW Fine Art.

Which camera do you recommend me to buy? Which are the absolutely best for
nature photography and
which give "most for the money"? Are there any special accessories you will
call attention to?
I already have bought 4 Rodenstock lenses in Linhof Technica boards.

I'm then going to scan the BW negs into Phsp and print using an Epson 2100.
But some of them
I will treat conventionally in the darkroom. Just for fun and to relax from
the daily stress. It's time to
stop, look back in the mirror and fulfill an old dream. This camera must
also be beautiful but not to heavy.

I have friends with the Zone VI and Wisner wooden field cameras and they
work fine. You might want to go with a Linhof Technica since you already
have the lenses mounted (it's not beautiful unless you admire fine machine
work). I have one and it is a tank, plus it has a quite long bellows draw.
It doesn't seem that heavy compared to a wood camera. You can save weight
and bulk by going with ready-load film. If you have a really wide-angle
lens, say wider than a 90, you'll want to see if your camera can accommodate
it.

Arne - Unless you really must have a wooden camera, you might look at the
Horseman 45 FA. It's metal, very sturdy and compact, lightweight, and
fairly versatile.

Another lightweight and inexpensive option are the
cambo cameras. I used the calumet cadet - which is
the lowest price cambo camera. It was solid and
excellent in the field.

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this company.

http://www.alettaphoto.com/index.htm#cameras

$300.00 for a 4X5 without lens.

They sell their cameras on Ebay as well.

You are going to get a lot of answers to this question but I think
for a wooden field
camera based on cost and features you can't do much better than a
Canham 4x5
wood field. It can take lenses from 75mm to 600mm. It light (6lbs)
and sturdy. I
think it looks really nice and there is a optional front standard
that can take linhof
boards. The customer service is great, you often get to talk to
Keith Canham himself
when you call. I think if you compare it to a Wisner you see that
the Canham is much
better built camera. The only wisner that compares is the pocket
expedition. Both
are about the same price ($2500). If you keep an eye out you can
find Canham's used
on Ebay.

Can you tell that I like my Canham? I have Linhof technika IV as
well but its nowhere
near as versitile as the Canham and it weighs the same.

good luck.

Dear Arne,

Many photographers, I believe, will agree that the camera that offers the best
combination of beauty, functionality and engineering for 4x5 work is the wonderful
Wisner Technical Field camera carefully crafted in Massachussetts by Ron Wisner
and his people. They are beautiful wood cameras with bright brass fittings. They
look good, they shoot good. I have used one for several years with great
satisfaction and pleasure.

In fact, having moved away from large format shooting now, I am about to sell my
Wisner if you might be interested

Jack

It really depends what you are wanting to do, but Canham (either wood or
metal), Ebony (for luxury and build).

Unless you buy from a dealer rather than direct, apparently Wisner seems to
have a bad rep for delivering on time.

Lots of camera reviews here:

Wisner and Zone VI Field Camera work very similar. If you do buy a Wisner
(and I am the proud owner of a 4 x 5 Pocket Expedition) DON'T buy
direct. I'm also a poster child for Wisner Can't deliver method of production.

Take a look at what lenses you shoot. If you shoot mainly in the 75 to 300
range then you can't go wrong with a Tachihara 4x5. If I was going to buy
a full featured Field Camera right now I'd buy a Canham wood 4x5. Next
would be an Arca-Swiss F-Field and I would still keep the Tachihara for
hiking long distances and airline travel.

OFF TOPIC THREAD was: The best 4x5 field camera

2004-02-10 by Martin Wesley

As dear as view cameras is to my heart I have to request that the
participants in this thread wrap it up or take it off list. This really is
outside the topic of this group, digital B&W printing. I am sure there are
some view camera lists out there that would be a better place for this
discussion.

Thank you,

I’m sorry! I thought we could discus the hole chain from capturing on film
or digital,
to digital printout in this group. I realize now that it was a bit off
topic. Anyway, thanks for the
answers I got.

Is this question OK:
“Which is (according to your experience) the best film for snow motives (to
scan)?”
or where do we start?
