Selling equipment

Selling equipment

2004-02-09 by Ken Carney

Hello all. Now that I'm firmly entrenched in desktop printmaking, I'm
thinking about selling my large format gear to make way for, what appears to
be, the inevitable transition to digital capture. Truth be told, I haven't
used the LF stuff for a while, having warmed up to 35mm. Now the lure of a
high-end digital SLR with instant gratification is strong. My question is
whether there are reliable places besides ebay on the internet. I don't
really trust ebay/paypal (I see to open a seller account they want my bank
account number in addition to a credit card number. I know --- everytime I
write a check someone has my bank account number, but still it doesn't sound
right, and I've heard lots of horror stories, defrauded once there
myself...). More to the point, a search for LF equipment on ebay today
resulted in pretty slim pickings. My search skills are probably just off
today, but I couldn't come up with alternatives. Any advice appreciated!

Regards,

Selling to someone online always has some element of the unknown. But
E-Bay and it's subsidiary, PayPay, are about as trustworthy as you can
get. They are just too big and too successful to have any interest in
ripping you or me off for what little we have. All the risk is in the
seller's description of condition, but that was always the case.

But if you have a lower cost 4x5 field camera and/or lens, contact me
off list.

You can always try KEH. (www.keh.com)

You might not get as much money as on eBay, but you won't get scammed.

[Digital BW] Re: Selling equipment

2004-02-09 by awahlster

I'm curious having been involved in almost 1000 auctions on ebay in
the last 4 years how would a person selling camera equipment "get
scammed"? As far as I can figure out the seller determins how they
will accept payment. A Postal Money order is pretty dad gum safe the
MO arrives and you put the item in the mail and off it goes while you
spend the money. If the New world of Paypal and things like ordering
items over the internet scares you stick with the Postal Money order
I've bought items from 11 different countries and sold to 2 dozen the
only person who never paid me was over a ten dollar item he was in
the states. I got a negitive for that one! 99.9% of the stuff I have
bought I was happy when the box was opened the other times I either
got mmy money back and returned the item or got screwed but never for
more then 20-30 bucks. So who would be doing the scamming.

Ken --

We too were uncomfortable with giving PayPal complete access to our
bank account. The obvious (and frighteningly real) scenario was that
someone would hack the PayPal withdrawal authorization and withdraw
all of the funds in the account. Since US banking law allows banks to
hold the account holder at fault, even in cases of obvious fraud
(whereas credit card companies must protect the client, except for
the first $50 -- which they usually waive), we felt this was a valid
concern. Valid enough to cause us to not upgrade to a "verified"
PayPal account for some time. (**)

The way we finally solved the problem was to arrange with our banker
to create another account which we only use for PayPal transactions.
We keep the minimum balance that the bank requires for no monthly fee
($1200 in our case) and only add to it if we buy something from
someone who cannot take credit card transfers (people with
"personal" rather than "premier" accounts).

This way, even if someone were to gain full access to the account, we
wouldn't lose everything we had in the bank -- only the $1200 maximum
we have set.

Except for that caveat we've found eBay an excellent place to buy and
sell and have never had any trouble with PayPal.

Hope this helps,

-=-Dennis

(**) BTW: Anyone who doesn't believe that the law allows banks to
dump fraudulent losses on the account holder should have their
checkbook stolen sometime. If someone writes those stolen checks your
bank _will_not_ stand behind you. If the checks go through the system
(and they invariably will, no matter how obviously wrong the
signature) then your only legal recourse will be to recover the
stolen funds from the person who fraudulently wrote and signed the
checks. Fat chance.

Ken,

Totally agree with you on eBay...just seems like I hear of scams on eBay nearly weekly. Shutterbug ad? Are you a subscriber to View Camera? If so, I would consider advertising there because you've got a target audience.

Sorry to say, but my guess is that large format equipment--like darkroom stuff--ain't gonna be worth much nowadays. That said, what have you got? I might be interested. E-mail me off-list. I'm not ready to give up my LF gear, yet, because I haven't personally seen digital output that can match the quality of a scanned 4x5 chrome. Maybe the 22-megapixel medium format backs come close, but I can't afford the cost of entry. Consider this...for less than half the cost of a Canon 1Ds, you could get a pretty nice 4x5 (even new) with a few lenses, and produce very nice work!

Good luck,
Alan Huntley

Hi all,
I've bought and sold many items on Ebay. Once I had someone win one of my
auctions and then never come through.
If you're selling that's the only thing you have to worry about. When I sell
something, I never ship until I have the payment in my hand and the buyer
pays shipping as well.
If I'm buying I always go by the amount of positive feedbacks that the
seller has.

I have over 100 transactions on eBay as a seller and buyer. As a seller it's really safe - the
item is sent only after payment is cleared - simple as that. As a buyer I've had only good
experiences. I sold a mint Deardorf for $3400. last year to a person in England - no
problem - I'm in NJ USA. I just sold an Adam's Minex Tropical for $2900. to a camera
collector in Japan - no problem:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2980262565

The only scam I've come across are emails saying my paypal/ebay account will be closed
and I need to send them all my account/credit card numbers and passwords again - yes
this is scary! I'm sure there will be a few people that will fall for it - I almost did the first
time! So what I do is as mentioned - I have a separate bank account for paypal and move
the money to my regular bank account ASAP.

I'm not real fond of Ebay and PayPal.

We no longer use PayPal nor Ebay as we actually experienced the problem
that Ken was uncomfortable with. Someone hacked our
Paypal account to 'charge' thousands of dollars of
photo equipment purchases, ostensibly through Ebay.

It was pure providence that my wife checked
our PayPal account on the morning this activity was taking place.
We deactivated our bank account and limited the loss.

On the subject of getting paid by after an eBay sale.
Do not accept Western Union, the buyer can cancel the
money order. Only the buyer can deal with
and resolve and problem
with a lost check.
Accept Cash or U.S.Postal Money orders.
There is an international money order as well......look at
ebay for info on that.
There is also a service eBay has
to insure your payment from the purchaser.

Alan has a good point, Ken. Unless you really need to sell you LF eq, I would hold on to it. There
may be times when your work demands such equipment. I suspect, too, that the price such eq. would
fetch may be less than would want. I still keep my 35mm Nikons, for example. -B

I was concerned of the possibility of the identity theft, so when I
registered
with PayPal - I registered only the personal bank account. For most of my
expenditures I use my business account, so I keep on my private one only
enough money to pay my bills through PayPal with it. I have never been
able to get anywhere else for my offered items as much as at the EBay.
The most problems people create by themselves answering to the deluge
of false ebay emails asking for the confirmation of the passwords etc.
Right now the hackers use a legitimate addresses (like ebay.com) to
send their fraudulent emails. The real EBay NEVER asks for the details
through the emails. All the problems any of my friends had with the
EBay came this way - supplying the sensitive info directly to the thieves.
So be careful - but you may trust the EBay itself I would think.

RE: [Digital BW] Selling equipment

2004-02-09 by Phil Radlick

Hi All, I too have purchased many things for my photography habit from
ebay quite successfully. However, early in the game I was a victim of a
fraud for about $1000 involving my attempt to purchase a camera from
what appeared to be a very well respected long time seller. That seller
had his ebay account hacked into by an international ring of thieves.
They used his reputation and id for support and I was asked to wire them
the money via a wire service. Thinking them to be legitimate I
complied. They took the money and I never got the camera. Later I
found an item on ebay telling us all not to purchase this kind of camera
this way because of the fraud potential. It did not prevent me from
continuing to buy on ebay.it just made me very cautious about each
transaction.

Thanks to all for your posts in general. Your generosity with your
knowledge is most appreciated by one who is just now learning how to
work with black and white digitally to produce fine images.

RE: [Digital BW] Selling equipment

Barry and others: As usual, great advice from this forum and I truly
appreciate all of the replies. I've focused, as it were, on the replies
suggesting "don't sell" and have re-thought my position. I have a Linhof
Technica field outfit with various lenses and accessories (including the
Rodenstock Imagon, one of the more bizarre things you can buy), and a Kodak
Master View field 8x10 outfit (the same setup that Jock Sturges uses when
his equipment isn't confiscated). They don't eat anything, probably aren't
valuable, just take up a little space. Though I'm presently interested in
35mm and the instant gratification of digital, that may change with time.
So I'll keep them. Thanks again for the attitude adjustment.

My only advice would be to go to the Post Office and get CASH for the money
order before (or as) you send the merchandise.

Fraudulent Postal Money Orders abound.

Re: Selling equipment

2004-02-10 by smthopr2000

I've bought a couple of cameras on ebay.

While buying can be a leap of faith, I only bid on cameras after talking wi=
th the seller
by phone.

I asked the sellers how they purchased the camera and how they had used it.=
 If they
were not photo enthusiasts or an established and reputable dealer, I didn't=
 bid.

By determining that the seller was very familiar with the camera, I believe=
d they
actually had one for sale. Once, I checked the reverse telephone directory =
at Verizon
to determine that the phone number was listed by the seller and I also wro=
te down
his mailing address. This helped satisfy me that I knew who he was and wher=
e to find
him if necessary.

OFF TOPIC THREAD was: Selling equipment

2004-02-10 by Martin Wesley

While selling equipment is something we are all faced with from time to time
it really is not an appropriate topic for this forum, certainly not at this
length. Please wrap this up or take it off list. Let's try and keep things
focused on the topic.

Thanks,
