Quadtone RIP Profiles for Epson Enhanced Matte paper.

Quadtone RIP Profiles for Epson Enhanced Matte paper.

2004-02-10 by Andrew Brillliant

I have just started to use Quadtone RIP on my 1160 with MIS FS
inks.......It works pretty well.

Has anyone come up with a decent profile for Epson Enhanced Matte
paper yet? I am getting a little too much ink in the darker areas. I
have not had time to use the profiling software included but it looks
like it will work. There is probably a combination of the two
"sample" profiles provided that will do the trick.

I am also planning on using the John Wolfe Workflow solution with the
Quadtone RIP and see if I can combine the two. That might seem a
little redundant but I can't take the time right now to come up with a
profile.

The Quadtone Rip and also Gimp for color printing seems to solve a
lot of the problems encountered when switching to OSX.

If you are like me and had every thing "hitting on all cylinders" in
system 9 but were frustrated with all the roadblocks in system 10 and
just went back to working in 9, fear not, the day is coming when OSX
will work as well. I know that some of you are already doing that
after investing time and money on new solutions.

But for those of us who need to make prints without learning new work
flows every few months this period has been rough and tumble.

I look forward to the coming months when easier and less costly
solutions appear.

Andrew,

A few ideas,

An solution without hassle using FS inks can be found
using the Piezography or R9 drivers.

The Piezography driver can only be used in OS9 - but
it works fine under classic. That's a pain if you
don't have much memory but it works.

Accordingly, you can purcase the updated piezography
driver for OSX, R9 Image Export from www.bwguys.com

For the cost of the software, $149, it is a small
price to pay for a large number of accurate profiles
of the MIS FS ink.

Hi Andrew,

The "sample" profiles are just approximate since I don't have those inks.
The best thing would be to have a densitometer and fill in the
LINEARIZE info. But if you don't have one, the next best thing is to
just adjust some of the profile values to get closer to what you'd like.
The easiest is the parameter GRAY_GAMMA which by default is 1 but
you can increase it to lighten the print. It works identically to the
Photoshop Adjust Levels command -- adjusting the middle slider
is a gamma adjustment.

Print out a 21step wedge and then try one with GRAY_GAMMA=1.5
Then decide if you need more or less. Another way is to take the
print and try to match the display to the print. Use Adjust Levels
and vary the middle slider till the display matches the print. You'll
have a gamma value of say .75 -- just take the reciprical i.e. 1/x
and that's the correction value to put into GRAY_GAMMA. and redo
the profile.

You could also change the media type to open the shadows a little.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
