Can I swap Espson 1280 carts between printers?

Can I swap Espson 1280 carts between printers?

2004-02-10 by jim0266

I ordered an Epson 1280 refurbished from Epson that I am returning
because it is cracked on the back and the prints don't center. I had
purchased a set of UT2 inks for the 1280 but not have installed them
because I am waiting for the replacement printer to arrive. In the
meantime I have been test BO printing on the 1280 to EEM paper with
the Epson cartridge. When the new printer arrives I need to first
install Epson carts to make certain the printer works correctly and
then switch to the MIS cartridges.

Can I take the cartridges out of the original 1280 and place them into
the new 1280 or do I have to open the sealed cartridges that will come
with the replacement printer? I would like to keep the carts that will
come with the replacement printer sealed for future use if needed.

I have been really thrilled with the quality of the BO prints I am
getting just from the Epson black ink. I can't wait to see how the
Eboni black looks in comparison.

After reading so many tales of woe and anguish I can't believe how
easy BO printing on the 1280 is on my Mac. I plugged the printer in
and right away was getting great results with prints that are very,
very close to what's on my monitor. I had previously calibrated my LCD
monitor with just a step wedge and that seemed to get me very close.

Thanks,
Jim

You can put the used carts in the new printer.

Jim,

Can you explain how you calibrated your LCD monitor using the
step wedge, and where you got the wedge. I use a PowerBook
G4, which I know isn't the best monitor, but it's what I've got at the
moment. Thanks.

Cheers,
George

Here's an excellent software solution to calibrate LCD and CRT monitors:

I found a step wedge online a few months back at
http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/viewing.html that has 21 steps from
black to white and alternating boxes of dark grey and black. I'm not
at that Mac now, but I may also have set the gamma higer than 1.8. I
just made certain that I could see all the steps in the image. I was
pretty surprised when the images that came out of the printer were so
close to the screen. Maybe it's just dumb luck on my part. :)

I'm running a KDS 15" LCD monitor.

Once I get the MIS inks installed I'll try and tweak it if necessary.
I seem to remember trying to run SuperCAL a while back and didn't like
that it gave me. Of course, YMMV.

Jim: sorry to hear of the problems with your refurb 1280. Especially
since I recommended it. At least they will send you a new one and you
just return the old one in that box.

Do install the Epson furnished driver and see if that solves your
print centering problem.

Just print like crazy till the new printer comes. Then return your
original one with empty carts. Your new printer will have new carts.

And no problems using the MIS carts in your old printer. Just take
them out and put them in your new printer when you're ready.

Bob,

The printed worked great. I just didn't want one with a broken part.
The plastic portion behind where the paper support inserts was cracked
about half way across. I've been very impressed with Espon's service.
I've come to expect customer service hell from companies in general
these days. I called their 800 number on Friday and had someone in
under 5 minutes. They immediately emailed me a shipping label and
arranged for the replacement to go out Monday 2nd day shipping. The
replacement printer arrived on today (Tuesday) as promised.

I couldn't get the new printer to connect. Again a speedy response
from their tech support solved that problem. But I was still getting
prints that weren't centered. This time I had a tech guy on the phone
in about 2 minutes. He walked me through downloading the latest
driver. But that didn't help as it looks like it's a shortcoming of OS
X. I'll have to use photoshop to compensate and center the prints
until they work it out.

Cheers,
Jim

Is the print not centered in the long direction? That's normal, I guess
because of the positional relationship between the feed rollers and the
platen. There's a setting to center it, at least in the Windows driver, but
you're warned that the quality may not be perfect near the edge.

I can't find anything in the Epson driver or on the Mac or in
Photoshop to center the print. I've been using canvas size in
Photoshop to add blank space to the print to get it centered. A hack,
but it works.

It's in the Windows driver, under the Page Layout tab. I'm surprised it's
not in the Mac.

I find that by using the ³no margins² driver for the 2100 that my prints are
centred perfectly (Mac, PC-CS). I don¹t know if this will work with the
1280 but it is worth a shot.

It is. Under the Print with preview menu in PS 7.0 - top of the dialogue box
next to the left and top margins is a centre image check box. I read the
left value and uncheck the box, moving the image up the page to optically
centre it without changing the left margin value. Seem to think you have to
have the bounding box check for the centre check box to be active.

At least with the 2100, with the no margins driver you do not need to go
through this hastle.

Here is an excellent tutorial in centering epson
prints using "print with preview"

The checkbox in the Print With Preview dialog, as you found out, centers the
image in the print area defined by the driver, which itself may not be
centered on the paper. I'm talking about a checkbox in the driver itself,
which centers the print area on the paper. It's there in the Windows driver,
but there is a warning that using it may degrade the print at the edge, I
guess because it continues to print after the paper is no longer captured on
both sides of the platen.

I added a pic of Ibex Dunes to the fm gallery. Not too awful an landscape
for a people shooter. :-)

too bad I didn't have enough time to hike in. The dunes are only about a
mile from the dirt road.

Those are beautiful, Lara, especially the Death Valley Junction shots. By
coincidence, I caught the sunrise at the dunes this past Sunday, and will be
posting some pix as soon as I've gone through them.

I'm running Epson print driver version 1.56E and by choosing "Standard
- Minimize Margins" it centers the print as suggested in an earlier
reply. No need to jump through the hoops suggested at the website above.

Thanks for the help. This list is great.

Thanks Paul! Love to see what you shot at the dunes. The others did the
early morning thing at the dunes....I slept in. :-)

I used the curves and lessons I learned in this group to print my first big
b&w today, used up the last of the ink for one good shot of the Ibex Dunes.
I love this process!

Death Valley must have been pretty busy with shooters this weekend, as most
of the groups I am in were talking about being there! I am a PJ but keep
trying for good landscape stuff. It is HARD!

I've put up a few Death Valley shots in
http://www.pbase.com/pderocco/black_white, including Footprints #1, Dune #1
and Dune #2. I expect to get a few more up there over the next few days.

I only saw about ten people out in the dunes at dawn, and an hour later they
were mostly gone.

I guess it was busy Saturday morning when my group was there.

You sure made those footprints work for you ‹ the images on pbase are great!
You make me want to go out to Kelso Dunes - a lot closer for me than DV.
